Question by LeeR: “Country Music” From Other Countries?
Country Music originated in the South of the US. I don’t think that is a fact that can be disputed. I know that people in other countries are sometimes fans. I’m also aware that there are such things as British “Country” Singers.

Do these artists imitate the vocal inflections of American country music to give their own music a similar American Country Music sound? Or do they sing in their own voices…? If they do…then, really, is that still “Country” Music?

P.S. I don’t listen to much Country. But I am aware of Keith Urban, whom I believe is Australian. I’ve heard some of his songs, to me it sounds like he is imitating that Southern Twang all Country Music I have ever heard has. Does anyone dispute that point? If not, don’t you agree that is kind of fake and misleading?

Blue Rodeo doesn’t sound a whole lot like any American country artists I’ve heard.

Nashville: The Roots and Pride of Country Music

Nashville is full of wonders; use these suggestions as your Nashville Tourist Guide and you won’t go wrong. You’ll find out that Nashville is music, of course. But it’s also so much more. Even if you’re not a country music fan, or even if your kids don’t think they are, Nashville is full of wonderful sights, sounds, and fun.

For instance, did you ever think you’d find Greek culture in Tennessee? The Parthenon can be found here, complete with some of the biggest bronze doors anywhere and a huge statue of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. It was built for an exposition and has become one of the somewhat unknown glories of Nashville. Nowhere else in the world is there a life-size replica of the building you’d have to travel to Greece to see!

Of course, Nashville is known for its music, and some of the greatest performers, country and otherwise, have recorded and performed here. To honor that history, be sure to take in the Country Music Museum and Hall of Fame to see original penned lyrics, instruments, and memorabilia used by the greats.

You can spend several hours here, then move on to a Nash Trash Tour where you can see where some of this music originated while partying (including being able to drink if you choose) on the bus.

If you like your entertainment a bit more refined, take a dinner or lunch trip on the General Jackson Showboat where there’s a singing serving staff and a 19th century feel. Allow 2 hours for lunch or 3 hours for dinner.

Maybe you’ve got the kids with you and you’re looking to learn something or just have some fun. There’s an Adventure Science Center where exploration is the thing and Laser Quest–one of the original laser tag centers in the country.

To beat the heat, there’s family friendly Wave Park where you can get soaked and then have a picnic.

Another way to take in nature is to go to the free Bicentennial Mall State Park with its botanical gardens featuring state plants and its fountains for every river in Tennessee.

This is a wonderful city that combines history, nature, and entertainment. Find any of these attractions and you and your family will certainly have a good time.

The Treasure House of Indian Folk Paintings

Promoting various art forms and artists was considered the solemn duty of the Emperors and Kings. Painting in particular received particular attention because apart from its avowed objective of promoting art, the other agenda was to create indelible record of a number of events. Given the diversity of India and the numerous Kings it had, no wonder that a number of Indian folk paintings came into being. Prominent among these Indian folk Paintings are Rajasthani Painting, Mysore Painting, Tanjore Painting, to name a few. Brief facts about these forms are discussed below.

Rajasthani Painting

Rajasthani painting has its origins in the state of Rajasthan, India. During the 18th century Rajasthani painting flourished in the Rajput Kingdom though the basic feel remained unblemished. Themes were largely drawn from the great epics of India like the Mahabharata or Ramayana. While gifted artists were available, procuring the required inputs was often a daunting task. In most cases, the artists were commissioned by the King and therefore, they were under compulsion to excel in their works.

Mysore Painting

This is a form classical painting from the Southern parts of India. This form of painting which originated in Mysore, under the present day Karnataka is famous for muted colours, elegance and attention to detail. The themes for this form of painting are often Gods and Goddesses from Hindu mythology. In modern times, these paintings have taken the place of exquisite souvenirs.

Tanjore Painting

This is among the oldest forms of Indian folk paintings, dating back to the 9th century and the Chola dynasty. As in the case of mot other Indian folk paintings, the theme remained mythological characters from the Hindu religion. What made these paintings even more adorable was post painting decorations. Semi precious stones, threads or laces were employed in the decoration. Final touch included pasting gold foils and using dyes to enhance colors to the paintings.

Question by jenjenta: How do you become a merchandise vendor at festivals/events?
I’d like to set up a vendor’s stall at festivals, fairs, etc. and sell various merchandise (not food).
I don’t know how to find a listing of the events that would accept applications for something like this, and I’d also love to know what types of fees are typically involved.
Are there any experienced vendors who could offer advise on how to get started?

If the event has a website, go there first. It should outline what you need to do to apply and all the fees associated. Are you interested in traveling, if so how far?

I would see how you like it first. Find the nearest swap meet and buy a table and try it for a few weeks. This will help show how well recieved your product is, and how much you enjoy it. Trust me, standing all day in the heat, watching your table like a hawk to avoid theft, and wondering how you are going to get to the toilet can really take a toll on a person. At the same time, it is a great way to meet new people.

That Little Ol’ Band from Texas comes up big in ZZ Top: Live from Texas, a concert recorded in Dallas in November, 2007. The hirsute trio (guitarist Billy Gibbons, bass player Dusty Hill, drummer Frank Beard) has been at it for nearly four decades now, and notwithstanding their synth-tinged commercial breakthrough in the ‘80s, they haven’t changed a whole lot in that time–not that that’s a bad thing, as ZZ Top is still essentially a fine, gut-bucket blues band. In the course of this 80-minute gig, they dig deep into the back catalogue, mixing in tunes from ‘70s albums like Tres Hombres, Rio Grande Mud, and Fandango, as well as more recent items from the multi-platinum Eliminator. Their themes (cars, women, good barbeque) are as eternal as their beards are long (well, not Beard’s beard; the fact that he doesn’t have one remains a source of ironic amusement), their shtick is effortlessly cool, their presentation is minimal (calling Gibbons and Hill’s moves “dancing” would be a major stretch), and their stage show is modest by Big Rock Show standards; the crowd eats it all up, especially when the band careens into a set-closing string of hits including “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “La Grange,” and, of course, “Tush.” This is the only ZZ Top concert performance out there, and while it has occasional shortcomings (in terms of both performance and technical aspects), it’s a fine example of a veteran band that remains a potent live attraction despite long-dwindling clout as record sellers.

As is often the case, the principal appeal of the Blu-ray edition of this title is its crisper visuals and especially its highly enhanced sound. Bonus material is the same as other releases, highlighted by Gibbons, Hill, and Beard playing poker while reminiscing about everything from opening for the Rolling Stones and the menagerie (buzzards, longhorn steer, tarantula, etc.) that accompanied the band on a long ago tour to Paula Abdul’s attempt to teach the boys some dance steps (the results speak for themselves). Their version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxey Lady” is pretty cool, too. –Sam Graham
