Treat Snoring and Sleep Apnea Today! How to Jump Start Your Practice Friday and Saturday- Learn the Basics for Treating These Patients Course Summary: Sleep disorders are vastly under- or undiagnosed in the general population. Research suggests that the effects of sleep deprivation are significant and cost millions of dollars annually. Dentists are in an ideal position to partner with other health care providers to effectively screen and treat sleep-related breathing disorders. Most patients see their dentist on a more regular basis than their physician. Due to the marked increase in sleep-related breathing disorders, it is imperative that dentists become familiar and comfortable with recognizing and treating these patients. This presentation is designed to provide a basic working knowledge of sleep and sleep-related breathing disorders. Treatment options for these disorders will also be covered. Ultimately it is hoped that this presentation will spur an interest in seeking a more comprehensive knowledge of this important aspect of dentistry. Course Presenter: Dr. Steve Bender earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry, in 1986 and practiced restorative dentistry for 14 years. He has completed postgraduate dental education training at the L.D. Pankey Institute and the Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Study. He studied orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders at the Parker E Mahan Facial Pain Center at the University Of Florida College Of Dentistry under the mentorship of Doctors Henry Gremillion and Parker Mahan. From 2000-2015 he maintained a private practice devoted to pain management of the head and face as well as sleep medicine. From 2016 he transitioned into a full time faculty member at the Texas A&M University. College of Dentistry and assumed the role of Director of Facial Pain and Sleep Medicine. He has earned Fellowship in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, the American Headache Society,the International Academy of Oral Oncology, and the American College of Dentists. He holds the Office of Council chair and the immediate past president of the American Academy of Oraofacial Pain and past president of the Fourth District Dental Society of Texas and the Dallas Academy of General Dentistry. In addition, he has served as a consultant for the United States Army. Disclosure: Dr. Bender has received honorarium from Airway Management. Paul McLornan DDS MS is a board certified Prosthodontist in private practice in San Antonio, Texas. He is also an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School. Dr. McLornan obtained his dental degree from Queens University, Belfast and his specialty certificate in Prosthodontics from UTHSCSA. The treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) using oral appliances was the subject of his master's of science research project during his residency and has been a special interest of his since. When treating snoring and OSA patients, Dr. McLornan follows the AASM guidelines and uses only the best researched FDA approved oral appliances. He works closely with referring physicians to ensure the correct diagnosis, treatment outcome and follow up for these patients. He is a member of the graduate faculty of the UTHSCSA Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where he serves as a research adviser to a number of OSA related studies. Dr. McLornan has lectured extensively at local, national, and international dental meetings and has authored numerous published articles. He teaches the Dental Sleep Medicine course at the Pankey Institute and is on the faculty of the Dental Institute of Sleep Medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. He is also a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Disclosure: There are no conflicts of interest. Dr. W. Keith Thornton is a third generation Dallas dentist who focuses his practice on treating snoring, and sleep apnea. He is a visiting faculty member at Texas A&M University, College of Dentistry, University of Texas San Antonio, and is a consultant to the Army, Navy, and Air Force and the VA. Dr. Thornton has built a private practice with an emphasis on treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea and has 72 issued patents.The Dallas Intellectual Bar Association recently named him inventor of the year. He is also the CEO and chief technical officer for Airway Technologies Inc. In addition, Dr. Thornton has successfully worked with physicians to develope and determine the guidelines for the Texas State Dental Board requirements for dentists treating sleep disordered breathing problems. His inter-professional treatment planning with other health professionals has made him a leader in the field of sleep apnea and snoring. Disclosure: Dr. Thornton is the founder of Airway Management. Learn how to make and adjust appliances. Learn to utilize pulse oximetry to screen for sleep related breathing disorders. Methods of Reimbursement Working with Physicians This course includes teaching methods of lecturing and hands-on demonstration in the laboratory. One on one teaching will be done by Drs. Bender and McLornan. A pre-course evaluation of knowledge will be provided and a postcourse evaluation will also be provided. Laboratory materials will be provided and the attendee is not required to bring any materials or instruments. The laboratory is equipped with handpieces and air. The Office of Continuing Education does not promote or support any particular appliance or device. There are no promotional hours provided in this CE program.
