A prolific recording artist and champion of new works for percussion and orchestra, Dame Evelyn Glennie performs American composer Jennifer Higdon's fascinating Percussion Concerto, a work that was written in 2005 for percussionist Colin Currie, and dedicated to him. The piece was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and was first performed in 2005, with Colin Currie as the soloist. It is an incredibly diverse, musically rich and exciting exploration of the various sonic possibilities of percussion with orchestra.
Maestro Tovey conducts in a program that also features one of the great symphonies of the 20th century, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. This work is filled with tragedy, fear, violence and emotion, but, finally, marked by the triumph of the human spirit over a crushing and oppressive regime.
