Death From Above 1979

Motion predicates progression. Death From Above certainly kept moving on their third full-length album, Outrage! Is Now (Last Gang Records/Warner Bros. Records). While gleefully maintaining the car-wreck intensity of their punkified disco rock, the hooks got hookier, the weirdness got weirder, and the wildness got, well, wilder. The mustached merchants of death dance discordSebastien Grainger (vocals, drums) and Jesse F. Keeler (bass, keys, synths)made a collective decision to embrace their own penchant for perpetual motion and cooked up the perfect soundtrack to Armageddons dancefloor.By your third album, I feel like you should be trying different things, whether subconsciously or consciously, exclaims Jesse. Youve got to stretch out the pizza dough of your idea and see how big you can make it creatively. After 17 years, things change. We both wanted to see how far we could take it as Death From Above. Once we started working on music, it seemed like this was going to be a record where the very idea of what our band is evolved. The myth of what we should be didnt exist anymore, Sebastien agrees. We didnt say it out loud of course, but it was like, Lets flex our abilities as much as we can and make some weird shit. There was never a moment where we took a conventional patheither writing or recording. There was always some strange spice thrown in. Its a grim record, but theres a bounciness to it. We captured an element of fun.The lads actually began pondering what became Outrage! Is Now while in the midst of finishing their 2014 record, The Physical World. Marking a sweaty and triumphant return after a near 10-year studio hiatus, their sophomore outing would be met with critical applause from Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Monster Children, Uncut, Alternative Press, and KERRANG! who awarded it a rare perfect score. It filled a void left in the aftermath of 2004s disruptively influential Youre A Woman, Im A Machine as Death From Above scorched the road alongside everyone from Deftones to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Eagles of Death Metal. The Physical World spawned fan favorites such as Trainwreck 1979, which generated an impressive 11.4 million Spotify streams to date and Virgins another to crack the 5-million mark. As they retreated to Jesses farm two hours east of Toronto to write in 2016, the musicians came to terms with adulthood as only two punks can.I think the band evolved because were evolving as individuals, says Jesse. Ive changed. My life is nothing like it was in 2000. Back then, we lived in an old funeral home. Now, I own an old cemetery. Were using the same amps though. Im fucking 40-years-old. Ive got two kids. I do totally normal dad stuff. I dont need to let anyone know who I am through my music. I can just make art that I enjoy. The goal of the record was to expand the vocabulary a little bit, not to drastically change, adds Sebastien. We stepped out of our comfort zone. With a host of demos, Death From Above headed back to Los Angeles to work with producer and engineer Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, etc.). Making for what Jesse describes as the fastest recording process, the vision quickly took shape as they developed an intimate working relationship with Eric. Nothing was off limits or out of bounds as evidenced by the first single Freeze Me. It shimmies from a piano melody into a slamming distorted bass and drum groove before Sebastien croons out one of the groups catchiest chants to date while stretching the limits of his vocal register.Ive been trying to encourage Jesse to write on keyboard more, he explains. Its an element on the first record that I wanted to use as much as we could. He sent me a voice note of the piano part, and we arranged it more or less how you hear it now. It felt like a welcome departure.I recorded it in the living room, and you can hear my wife and kids talking away in the background on the first demo, Jesse laughs. Someones doing the dishes, and something even falls over!On the other end of the spectrum, the title track could be a state-of-the-union for post-millennium malaise wrapped in a robust bass riff, glitchy production, and lines like, Im out of rage, maybe its my age.Theres an absolute chaos and confusion in the world, and people who would otherwise agree on most things seem to be disagreeing, sighs Sebastian. Theres a lot more space between the poles of opinion and views on the world. It seems like a barrier of disgust as we almost dehumanize each other based on a few slight differences of opinion. The title is an observation of this hyper sensitivity, which were all a part of. Its not meant as an accusation; its just a statement of the times. The jarring bass blast of Moonlight gives way to another departure with an unabashedly metal moment of double kick drums as Sebastien relives one of the most horrifying experiences of his life. Its the most personal song on the record, the vocalist admits. When we were on tour in Dallas last year, I was jumped by a group of kids and got the shit kicked out of me. It was an extremely intense experience that I couldnt ignore. Experiencing that kind of violence and fear cant help but put a perspective on your life. I literally thought I was getting murdered. We even call the middle section, The fight scene.Meanwhile, the swaggering NVR 4EVR incorporates the remains of deceased fan James Marshall Matthews Jr., with a vial of his ashes shaking the song into existence. James was a huge fan of the band, and he died in an accident before he got to see us reunite, Sebastien explains. His sister came to a show in Washington D.C. and spread his ashes in our trailer so he could come on tour with us. She gave me this vial of his remains. It was a really moving and intense exchange for the both of us. I brought that vial on all of the tours we did and up to the farm. When we were doing percussion overdubs for NVR 4EVR, I had to use them. The track starts with the riff and that shaker is actually his earthly remains. Its a very special song to us and his family.Ultimately, Outrage! Is Now confidently kicks off a new chapter for Death From Above. I hope fans see the progression, Jesse leaves off. This record is very much the result of the environment and experiences of the last five years. I can hear everything weve been through. This weird resolve builds up as you keep facing different circumstances. If we didnt have struggle, life would be really fucking boring. Now that its all done, I enjoy it.Its meant to be felt and stimulate you on an emotional level, concludes Sebastien. We tried to make something that excites and surprises us. My journey is that of enlightenment all the time and seeking some form of truth. Theres enough fiction in the world. Were not going to tell you what to believe. Thats up to you.

Texas Ranks Above Average on National Credit Scores

Texas Ranks Above Average on National Credit Scores

Credit card usage is on the rise, according to a report released this week by the well-known credit-tracking company, Experian. More Americans have more cards, and heavy users are just getting heavier. Texas isn’t doing so bad, though, ranking below the national average for the number of cards per resident, the percentage of those who own more than ten cards, and the percentage of those using fifty percent or more of their credit limits.

Texas residents had an average of 3.3 cards each, and just under eleven percent owned ten or more. Forty-four percent in the study had more than two cards, and 12.9% were using half or more of their available credit. That’s pretty good, considering that the average American holds four cards, ten percent have at least ten of them, and fourteen percent are using fifty percent, or more, of their credit limits. New Hampshire ranked the highest for the average number of cards (5.3), the number of those who owned two or more cards (63.4%), and the percentage of those who had ten or more of them (20.3%).

Experian’s study was conducted by randomly pulling 3.2 of their 215 million credit files. Each state was given its own statistics, as well as being a part of the national averages. Credit scores were also analyzed using Experian’s own “PLUS” system, though there are many systems in use — including the most popular, FICO, which was created by Fair Isaac. Credit scores, once analyzed, are used by lenders to deny or approve credit and to determine interest rates.

Twenty to thirty factors affect credit score, however — not just credit card usage. These can include total debt load, type of debt, payment history, lines of credit, and bankruptcies, including those filed due to medical bills. New England, for instance, is the nation’s heaviest credit user, but residents’ scores are also, on average, the highest. The main problems with credit cards come with their misuse. Balances on cards exceeding sixty-five percent of their limits and poor payment histories count as negatives. Any debt carried month-to-month is also a bad sign, according to Elizabeth Warren, Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and co-author of The Fragile Middle Class: Americans in Debt. It means the holder is not living on his or her income, she says.

“Typically, the higher the utilization, the lower the (credit) score.” Those in New England, however, “are paying their bills on time, so their credit scores are not suffering,” said Pete Bolin, senior analyst for Experian.

Though the state’s overall credit rating seems fine for now, the healthcare crisis may leave residents of Dallas, Houston, Austin and other cities and towns throughout Texas particularly vulnerable to credit ruined by unpaid medical bills, as twenty-five percent of its population is living without health insurance, including twenty-seven percent of its young adults. Credit reports don’t treat medical bills differently from any other debt owed, as evidenced by the fact that half of all bankruptcies in the U.S. are filed due to illnesses and medical bills, according to another Harvard study. Thirty-eight percent of those who filed for these reasons lost their health insurance at some point during their medical hardships, many as a result of employer-sponsored coverage backing out.

Credit cards alone are enough to worry about, especially for those carrying high balances. The federal office of the Comptroller of the Currency is pressuring banks to double cardholders’ minimum payments to four percent in order to weed out high-risk borrowers. Many are protesting such a move; forcing more Americans to file bankruptcy, after all, is not going to solve problems in the housing market, nor the tendency to mismanage credit.

Robert D. Manning, author of Credit Card Nation and director of the Center for Consumer Financial Services at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, believes the current situation is partially the result of an aggressive and immensely profitable credit card industry, however — not just the credit card holders themselves. Those with poor credit are forced into obtaining several cards with low credit limits and high fees to get what they want, he says.

Huge penalties and astronomical interest rates imposed for missed payments don’t help the situation either, and when payments become overwhelming, credit ratings just get worse. When credit ratings go down, so does the number of those who qualify for large loans, and thus, the housing market — the decline of which is making big news of late. The best thing to do for now? Save your credit if it’s sliding, and maintain good scores if it’s not. Bolin suggests the following:

(1) Calculate your next move. Before closing credit cards, for instance, figure out the effect on your balance-to-limit ratio.

(2) Vary the types of loans you take out. These can include auto loans, mortgage loans, installment loans, equity lines of credit, credit cards, and student loans. This shows creditors you can handle debt in different types of situations.

(3) Make payments on time! No matter the debt load or type, without timely payments, your credit is shot.

(4) Limit the use of available credit to sixty-five percent or less. If you can pay off your debts every month, do it. The lower the balance, the better. Zero, of course, is best.

Being aware of issues affecting your credit rating, and how that credit may be affected by your healthcare coverage is an important aspect of maintaining control of your life. How you take care of yourself will certainly affect you as you age, and eventually your wallet, as well.
