Live in Boot Camp-Did Anyone Get the License Number of That Truck That Hit Me?

Live in boot camps accommodate clients who need intense supervision and accountability for eating, sleeping, and most of all-training correctly. A firm commitment is required on the part of the client in order to comply with such a regimen. Customary in the fitness industry, services are prepaid upon signup. Financial commitment plays a strong factor in following through once the self-doubts begin.

FIVE hours of exercise daily?

How much exercise is an unfit, overweight person capable of participating in, anyway? Scenes of obese contestants on the Biggest Loser TV show bring up these questions. What is not shown is the behind the scenes pre-conditioning workouts that basically get you in shape to start getting in shape. There is a progression to the activities as with any good fitness program. The program begins at the level of the participant’s capability.

Did anyone get the license number of that truck that hit me?

Then it hits you. You wake up and, “whoa!” You really feel your body. There will be an initial period of muscular soreness that will come in waves of delayed onset. That is, not so much the next day but the day after that will be when you feel the most discomfort. Movement is the best remedy for the soreness and you will be getting plenty more movement. Depending on one’s attitude toward the body discomforts, this can be an encouragement indicating that results are forthcoming. Some people will feel guilty for letting themselves go physically and they will view the discomfort as self-punishment.

Support and encouragement are necessary to get through the second week.

Usually, after the first week in a month long program the client starts to realize how much effort they have made and they become overwhelmed at the thought of continuing. This is a natural stage that many go through. However, the first stage is the most difficult. The initial accomplishment in making a change for oneself is what carries them through the hard phase. Then, the body begins to respond.

Hey, I see a muscle when I flex!

Most individuals can recognize results within a week to ten days. Muscle tone, and excess water weight changes become apparent. Then, within 2-3 weeks there is no doubt that the mirror is becoming a daily friend and your best encouragement. Others will notice and comment at this phase about the noticeable difference in your appearance.

The results you begin to realize at this point will make your program self-perpetuating. Once you have established the 3-week habit, plus gained the know-how and confidence in your new health regimen there will be no turning back.

After all, you have worked hard and are worthy of results to show for it. Why would you give up your goal? Giving up usually doesn’t happen after a person has actually learned to live in bootcamp. You will actually make different choices based on maintaining your hard-earned efforts. Your confidence will soar; you can hold your own in any gym or exercise group. You are a live-in boot camp graduate and have the stuff that it takes to keep it up.

A local Coppell fitness business has teamed up with Coppell resident,  Jeff Trondsen, to help sponsor the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. Brad Linder, owner of Get You In Shape, who runs the Coppell Weight Loss and Fitness Boot camp at Andy Brown East Park in Coppell is happy to be able to help sponsor Jeff.   Jeff has been getting ready for this big event that will be coming to Dallas/Ft. Worth area  November 6-8, for the past 8 months.  Jeff began his preparation by joining the Get You In Shape Coppell Boot Camp eight months ago.  Jeff said “The Coppell Boot Camp has helped get my body ready to walk 60 miles in 3 days. The core work, resistance training, and cardiovascular exercises we have done has been great for my preparation. With only a few weeks before the walk, I know I could not have done it without the help of Brad, the trainers, and the Coppell Boot Camp”. 

The Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer 3-Day helps to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of this event go to the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Foundation. Every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education, and prevention in the last 25 years has been touched by a Koman for the Cure grant.  The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, which provides ongoing support to breast cancer initiatives. Linder and Coppell’s Get You In Shape Boot Camp  is helping Jeff by sponsoring him and helping him in his quest to help raise money for breast cancer research.

Brad Linder, the Coppell Personal Trainer who teamed up with the City to provide the Coppell Boot Camp in 2007, has enjoyed helping Jeff get fit and in shape before walking 60 miles. “It has been great helping Jeff prepare for this.  Our fitness program really focuses on the individual reaching his or her goals. Being in a group setting helps with encouragement, motivation, and inspiration. We are glad to be able to help sponsor Jeff in his goal to complete the Breast Cancer 3-Day” said Linder.

They feature studs (cleats) protruding from the sole for traction on a playing field covered with grass or similar surface; hence they are called “cleats” in American English. Association football boots are called soccer shoes in American English. In most codes of football, modern “boots” are not technically boots as they do not cover the ankle. They can be made from a wide variety of leathers, kangaroo leather being a popular choice

elastic socksThe first record of a pair of football boots occurs when Henry VIII of England ordered a pair from the Great Wardrobe in 1526. [1] The royal shopping list for footwear states: “45 velvet pairs and 1 leather pair for football”.[2] Unfortunately these are no longer in existence.

In association football’s Laws of the Game, Law 4: Player’s equipment deals with football boots. Until 1891, any kind of projection on the soles or heels of football boots was strictly forbidden. The 1891 revision allowed both studs and bars, so long as they were made of leather and did not project more than half an inch, and they had their fastenings driven in flush with the leather. Studs had to be rounded, neither conical nor pointed and not less than half an inch in diameter. The leather studs were originally hammered into the boots on a semi-permanent basis and players would have several pairs of boots with different length studs, but in the mid-1950s Adidas introduced boots with interchangeable screw-in studs made of rubber or plastic for varying weather conditions. Football boots were originally heavy boots with protection for the ankle, and these remained the standard style of boot in northern Europe for many years where the boots needed to stand up to the rigours of use on muddy winter pitches. A lighter boot without ankle protection and resembling a studded shoe became popular in southern Europe and South America where pitches were generally harder and less muddy and this eventually became the standard style.

Depending on the type of surface, kind of sport and even the wearer’s position or role in the game, different cuts of boot and particularly stud arrangements are available. For hard fields, amateur participants may wear a sneaker shoe or a plastic-stud boot (known as a “moulded sole”); in most sports and positions this is adequate, although on a well-grassed or sodden field, a screw stud is recommended for more grip; these may be metal, rubber or plastic.

For rugby union, the screw-in stud (or in some cases a metal-tipped, moulded stud) is preferred, especially in the positions of prop, hooker, and lock, where more grip is required for contested scrums. These screw-in studs are commonly either completely of metal construction or plastic with metal tips, of a maximum length of 18mm. These boots are often heavier than appropriate for other types of football.

Screw-in studs have been banned in some Australian rules football leagues since the 1990s due to the frequency of severe injuries to players as a result of contact with the metal. In football, referees must now check all boots prior to kick off to check for damage to studs, to prevent injury. Before this time, preference between the screw-in stud was based primarily on weather conditions.

More recently, moulded soles with specially designed boots known as blades have moulded soles facing in multiple directions, theoretically to maximise grip and minimise ankle injury. Recently, however, “bladed” football boots have faced criticism from some UK sporting bodies for causing potentially serious injuries to players. English football club Manchester United have even banned its players from wearing boots with bladed studs.[3]

Hormone imbalances can have a great impact on weight – both in gaining weight and efforts to lose it.  My goal through this week’s tip is to try and simplify your understanding of how hormone imbalances come about and what you can do to correct or prevent it from happening.  

Why understanding hormone imbalances is important

Typically and in an optimal state, hormones work in perfect harmony together to help keep your body running smoothly and healthy.  When just one hormone is out of balance, it can cause all sorts of problems.  Many times these imbalances can and often do lead to weight gain.  
As a person that has dealt with weight gain, I know the challenges of trying to shed unwanted pounds and keep them off.  When losing weight would finally become a priority for me, I would work really hard to try and lose weight using previously tried successful methods.  However, as I got older, previous diets would not work for me and just seemed to be harder and harder to lose the pounds.  

When I retired in April of 2007, focusing on my overall health and wellness became a priority for me.  I was determined to get in shape and lose weight once and for all!  In addition, as a woman rapidly approaching my 50’s, I know I am going to face even more challenges as the menopause years loom ahead of me.  

About this same time, I also started listening more closely to the troubles other women faced as they aged and struggled with weight gain. “It must be hormone related” was the common response I heard to “Why can’t I lose weight?”  Hearing these comments combined with my own issues, got me interested in learning more about the role women’s hormones play in weight gain and more importantly, what we can do to lose the weight.
Hormones:  Simplified (I hope!)

Our bodies produce many hormones, but there are three hormones in particular that play a key role in aging and weight gain:  Insulin, stress (adrenaline and cortisol are the primary stress hormones), and estrogen hormones.

Insulin plays a huge role within our bodies as it relates to metabolism and body fat.  Its main job is to regulate the absorption of sugar (or glucose) into our body’s cells.  Glucose is our body’s primary source of energy or “fuel” and is needed to perform any physical task. What we put into our bodies makes a big difference on how well insulin can perform its function.    

Sugar gets in our bodies through carbohydrates (carbs).  Foods in their natural state, (such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains) are the “good carbs”.  “Bad carbs” are those foods that are refined and processed.  Typically, most of the nutritional value has been stripped from these foods.   When are diets regularly consist of bad carbs, over time this type of eating behavior can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. “When you are insulin resistant your body converts every calorie it can into fat — even if you’re dieting. And it won’t let you burn fat when you exercise.”¹  

The type of food we eat isn’t the only thing that can disrupt the balance of our hormones.  Stress hormones kick into high gear when our bodies perceive some type of external threat. A threat can be anything from stubbing your toe to a blow to the head.  As soon as your body perceives a threat, stress hormones block off or suppress many processes within our bodies, including our digestive process.  When we experience a prolonged state of stress, our system goes into what is sometimes referred to as the “famine effect”: “despite adequate food, the body interprets prolonged stress as a famine, and once again, the body thinks it should store every spare calorie as fat.”¹

Everyone has stress in their life.  How we deal with it determines whether or not our stress hormones become imbalanced.  
Natural changes women go through in our lives do not always cause a hormone imbalance.  However, as we age, the estrogen hormone that is produced in a woman’s ovaries, begin to produce less and less.  During this slowed production time, our body naturally looks for someplace else to produce estrogen, such as within other organs, our skin or guess what?  Body fat!  Yes, our fat cells can produce estrogen.  

If a woman carries extra body fat, in particular in their belly, the situation often becomes exacerbated because these now estrogen producing fat cells have even more reason to stay put!  Even more worrisome is that excessive estrogen production is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer.  The same risks that is found in people that carry too much weight around their bellies!  See the connection?

How to fight back and return your hormones to perfect harmony

Hopefully you see the connection these hormones have and their importance to our ability to fight the spread of our middle as we age.  Given our lifestyles today, it is no wonder our hormones are out of balance.  The access to fast foods and easy quick meals is too convenient.  Couple a bad diet with the daily stress we all face in trying to juggle families, careers, spouses and a social life. Even if we do have a good handle on these two areas of our life, no woman can stop the aging clock.  It’s no wonder so many adult women feel they are in a no win situation in their struggle with weight gain.  

•   First, focus on a healthy diet.  One that consists of lean meat, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lots of veggies and fruits as well as healthy oils and minimized alcohol intake.
By simply changing what you put in your body, you will immediately begin to see changes in how you feel.  You will have more energy, (which will allow you to deal with your stress better), you will most likely sleep better, (adding further to your energy level) and you may even start to lose weight!  By putting good calories in your body, your insulin will quit converting the calories to fat and allow your body to begin burning calories.
•   Second and very simply put – just move!  Start walking.  Dance around the house.  Stretch.  Join a gym.  Buy some inexpensive workout DVD’s.  Hire a personal trainer of find a local fitness boot camp. Just do something.  Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually add 5 minutes to your day.  You don’t have to exercise all at once either.  Break it up throughout the day.  Whenever you can get 10 minutes in.  However, eventually try to get in at least 30 minutes per day.

By adding exercise to your daily routine combined with a healthy diet you will begin to see a change in how you feel and your overall appearance.  Give it time though.  Those extra pounds didn’t appear in just 2 weeks or a month, so don’t expect to lose it all in that amount of time.  Expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week and in no time, you will have the results you have been wanting.
