STANDUPLD TO HOST SECOND ANNUAL “CELEBRATION DAY” FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES

North Texas Students, Parents, And Educators Unite to Celebrate Learning Differences And Share Experiences

(Dallas) February 13, 2017 – What a difference, a difference makes.
StandUpLD, a Dallas-based nonprofit network for parents, educators, and students with learning differences, will hold its second annual conference on Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. Programs will be in both English and Spanish. General admission is , and student admission is .

Keynote speaker John Rodrigues, author of “High School Dropout to Harvard,” will kick off the day. Rodrigues is an advocate, educator, ice sculptor, and content specialist for the Federal Department of Education. Entertainment Weekly has described him as “an uplifting, rebellious voice who will strike a chord with anyone who has ever had a hard time marching in step in a culture of conformity.” “Being You,” a feature film about how Rodrigues overcame dyslexia, will be shown on the ballpark lawn.

In keeping with StandUpLD’s mission to support and inspire students, the StandUpLD venue will highlight its youth during the afternoon event, “StandUp, SpeakOut!” Local teens will work with adults and other mentors to share how their journey with a learning challenge has shaped them.
Victoria “Tori” Rash, Miss Teen South Texas International 2017, is the student keynote speaker for the second year in a row. Rash has autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and sensory disorders. She founded “Tori’s Charity Treats” to support early identification of and intervention for learning differences.

“I walked away from this conference inspired. Not only from the keynote speaker, but hearing the students share their own personal journeys with dyslexia. We don’t have many conferences like this where the youth are as much a part of the conference as the adults. It’s wonderful to have this unique conference in Dallas!” said G-g Shryer, an educator from the June Shelton School.

Conference programming will give parents the opportunity to meet and greet with local learning experts and hear about the latest assistive technology for supporting students with learning differences. Continuing Education Unit and Academic Language Therapy Association credits are available for educators.
