Question by Michael: What are the key differences between DPs and SIDs ?
Example
The two types of DPs are obstacle departure procedures (ODPs) and standard Instrument departure (SIDs).
I’m thinking a ODP is a pilot nav DP and a SID is a Vector DP
does that sound about right

Is the term “Standard Instrument Departure (SID)” still a valid term in the
U.S.? According to the Jeppesen Instrument/Commercial manual, the term
“SID” is used outside the U.S. only. Furthermore, the manual tells us that
in the U.S., a “SID” is called a “ATC Departure Procedure.”

However, the current California Jepp Airway Manual continues to define “SID”
in its Chart Glossary, and even has an introductory section entitled “SID/DP
and STAR Legend.” Moreover, there are procedures labeled “SID” in the
Airway Manual (e.g. Arcata-Eureka HOCUT TWO, etc.).

Why is the Jepp Apple Valley EXCON1.EXCON DP labeled a “DP,” and the
Arcata-Eureka HOCUT2.HOCUT procedure labeled a “SID?” HOCUT2 was last
updated in Oct 90. Was there a nomenclature change? When? Why? And, why
hasn’t Jepp published new procedures with the new terminology?

Interestingly, the current NACO U.S. Terminal Procedures does not even
include the HOCUT2 “SID/DP” in it (nor numerous other procedures such as the
Atwater ILS DME Rwy 31). Why does Jepp publish procedures the government
doesn’t publish? NACO does not even define “SID” in its Abbreviations
section. What’s going on here?

Finally, according to the Jepp Instrument/Commercial Manual, an “ATC DP”
(supposedly, the new term for “SID”) is distinguished from an “Obstacle DP”
in that the ATC DP procedure is simply used to facilitate pilot/controller
communications, expedite traffic flow, and help with noise abatement
(whereas the Obstacle DP is used primarily to provide obstacle clearance).
Jepp talks about an “Obstacle” label being on some DPs and not on others.
Are there examples of old “Obstacle DPs” still around (with the “Obstacle”
label on them)?
