Varanasi: The City of Fairs and Festivals

Varanasi: The City of Fairs and Festivals

Varanasi is the last pilgrimage spot for Hindus located on the left bank of the Ganga River along the Uttar Pradesh state. Their rich cultural traditions and heritage of Varanasi has made it the city of fairs and festivals.

Varanasi is known as the oldest living city in the world. It is also the culture capital of India. The place became the center for fairs and festivals by virtue of their cultural and religious importance. Festivals are celebrated almost every month. The celebration symbolizes life at its best with the dedication of Varanasi’s beliefs.

Varanasi is commonly known as Banaras or Banares. The city became the center for learning and civilization over 3000 years ago. Its culture is greatly associated with the river’s religious traditions. It has been the symbol for Hindu renaissance and devotion to the gods. People believed that the Ganges River has the power to wash away the sins of mortals. Hence, a person who dies on Varanasi would achieve freedom and salvation.

Many festivals are celebrated in high spirits. A huge number of foreigners visit the place in order to witness the significance of each fair.

Bharat Milap at Nati Imli
Bharat Milap is celebrated from October to November. The festival is held in regard of Lord Rama’s (the chief protagonist of Ramayana) return to Ayodhya after his 14 years of exile and his reunion with his brother, Bharat. The festival attracts millions of devotees in a whole day fair following Dussehra. The festival shows the profound love of the Lord Rama and Bharat and the victory of good over evil.

Buddh Purnima in Sarnath
Buddh Purnima is held in May celebrating Lord Gautam Buddha’s birth. This festival connotes the birth and death of Buddha on a full moon day. The relics of Buddha are taken out to view by the public on procession. Sarnath is the place for the large fair celebrated with rare abandon.

Ramlila of Ramnager
Ramlila is a month long feast with regards on Goswami Tulsida’s Ramcharitmanas. A live show of ancient rituals or pantomime is presented in the form of Surpnakha Nasika Chedan, Dhanush Bhang and Ram Janmotsav. The two performances tackle the story of Lord Rama.

Dhrupad Mela
Dhrupad Mela is held every March. It is a 5-day musical festival performed by renowned artists. Tulsi Ghat is a popular place among tourists that come to experience the musical extravagance.

Hanumat Jayanti Janmotsav
Hanuman Jayanti Janmotsav is celebrated at Sankat Mochan Temple. It is a 5 day cultural and musical affair by Indian artists. The fair is based on Hanuman Charitra, Saraswati, Ram and Krishna Lila. It commemorates the birth of Hanuman (mythical character).

The Nakkatayya and Nah Nathaiya are other festivals in Varanasi which is dedicated for Rama and the Lord Krishna.

Nakkatyya – Chetganj
A stage play is reenacted showing the story of Ramayan during this festival. This is a story wherein her sister Surpnakha insisted to attract Laksman and Ram. The cutting of the nose of Surpnakha was enacted in a beautiful way onstage. Decorated lags are taken out for the occasion.

Nag Nathaiya
Nag Nathaiya is part of the Krishna Leela ceremony. It is a mythological tradition depicting the life episode of Lord Krishna jumping into the Ganga River for Nag Nathan. Nag Nathaiya’s origin can be traced back to the Mahabharata. The festival is held at Tulsi Ghat during the month of November to December.

Mahashivratri
Mahashivratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva where a marriage procession of Lord Shiv is presented from Mahamritunjaya temple to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Around 50,000 to 60,000 people gather here to see this much loved festival. All the temples are decorated and devotees offer milk, songs, bhajans and hymns to create a sacred atmosphere.

Other fairs and festivals are the Panch Koshi Parikrama and Dev Deepavali (festival of lights). The pure and divine ambiance of the festivals attracts many people. The blessed city of Varanasi captivates many devotees, expressing their cultural tradition.

Seychelles fairs and festivals

Seychelles fairs and festivals

A mainly East African cuisine feast is spread out for those who managed to pay the entry fee at the Kenyan night traditionally held at the International Conference centre in Seychelles. This event and a whole host of others similar to it have been held to celebrate Fet Afrik in Seychelles. One of the many fairs and festivals held in Seychelles all throughout the year. Fet Afrik festival in Seychelles is held to pay tribute to the country’s African roots, although the later years Kenyan culture has heavily featured in the event as many Seychellois had migrated to that country. The popular event in the Seychelles also features international as well as local performers, each giving their take on the African culture.

Another festival held in the Seychelles is the Rotary club of Victoria fishing tournament; a charity event where the best fishermen are given cash prizes. Held in April just before the south east monsoon the tournament goes on for 2 days, however with all the exotic fish to be found in the Seychelles waters, everyone taking part in the event is bound to be a winner.

If you are planning a trip to Seychelles in August it is the perfect time to attend the Assumption feast held on La Digue Island. This feast is especially symbolic to the locals who are in majority Roman Catholics. It is a tradition to have young children parade on the island in the honour of the Virgin Mary, singing hymns that have been sung by generations before them. Interestingly once the religious rituals are over, it is the perfect chance to witness the welcoming nature of people on La Digue as well as their fun loving side. It is a time of serious partying on the usually quiet island.

The main festival in Seychelles is the Kreol festival held in October, a mind blowing experience indeed!

Priding itself on being the ‘Creole Capital of the world’ the event lasting a week is one full of carnivals, musical shows all depicting different aspects of the Kreol culture. This festival is when the Seychellois –on all 118 islands- show their pride at being Creole for the entire world to see. It is the Seychelles equivalent to the Rio de Janeiro festival. Children as young as five join in the carnival –with a different theme every year- dancing in the streets and generally having fun.

This is another festival in the Seychelles which must not be missed at all costs! Artists from other creole–speaking countries are also invited to show aspects of their culture. The Kreol festival held in October in the Seychelles is really a time where Victoria proves to the world that it is indeed the creole capital of the world!

‘tis the Season for Outdoor Concerts, Fairs and Festivals

‘tis the Season for Outdoor Concerts, Fairs and Festivals

Summer is here – outdoor venues’ event calendars are looking plump! Everyone is gearing up for concert picnics, outdoor plays, and summer concerts â?? even restaurants and eateries are offering gourmet picnic baskets to take to these events. Get your hats, umbrellas, beach chairs, and picnic blankets ready!

One particular event that I look forward to this summer is the California Philharmonicâ??s Festival on the Green. It’s held at the Los Angeles Arboretum every summer in succeeding weekends. Each performance features a theme (Classics, Dance, and Movie themes to name a few). This event started in 1997 – a vision of Maestro Vener. The event came a reality with the help community leaders and the Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department. This year is definitely special as Festival on the Green is celebrating its 10th year.

There are many events happening in other parts of the country â?? if you are a big literary fan, the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR is the event for you. Founded in 1935, this Tony Award Winning event is among the oldest theatre events in the country. Started by a teacher from South Oregon Normal School, Angus L. Bowmer, the festival was officially launched on July 2, 1935. Bowmer’s idea is to create a festival in conjunction with the city’s Fourth of July celebration. In 2001, the 10 millionth ticket holder was welcome. This festival is definitely one to check out!

An event that has been gaining worldwide notoriety is the Burning Man Project. Founded by Larry Harvey and Jerry James in 1986, it started as an annual fire party at Baker Beach in San Francisco. This event began with a humble group of friends and now grew to a community of 25,000 people. There are different descriptions of this event… Some say it’s Art festival, some would describe it as music festival, and others a social experiment. It is probably a combination of all these â?? it seems the Burning Man Project is what you want it to be or how you experience it to be. The only way to find out is to go there yourself!

Whatever you are interest in; there is a summer event for you. There’s music, arts, theatre, culinary, and many more. Definitely plan ahead and get your tickets early, as most of the very popular events sell out months in advanced. Be sure to check out the events websites to see any restrictions (such as age, alcohol, transportation, etc.), if any.

To see a calendar of events happening this summer â?? music, concerts, festivals, theatre, culinary â?? visit The WhereWhen Project: http://www.thewherewhenproject.com. Calendar access is free with no registration required… And if you have an event to promote, posting events are free as well.

Jennifer Atienza is the owner and editor of The WhereWhen Project – an online calendar of events. Jennifer seeks out and features concerts, theatre, festivals, and other events on her site to share with her audience.
