Causes and Solution to Menopausal Symptoms…

Here are a few things that lead to menopause:

– Drinking Dark Colas (I’ll explain why in a moment)

– Lack of Proper Resistance on Bones (I’ll explain that too =)

–  Genetics (Don’t put too much weight on this one (kind of a pun on previous reason! haha.  But real)

When we’re talking about drinking too much dark cola notice my words, “too much”.  I’m obviously not a proponent of Sodas AT ALL and my mom definitely never let us get Kool-aid or made sodas a habit for our home but I do point out “too much” for  reason.

Just because something is healthy doesn’t mean more is better and just because something is unhealthy it doesn’t mean that a tad will kill you.  Balance is the key here and in the West that is a PIVOTAL #1 Problem of our culture.  We’re extreme in everything.  Exercise, Diet, Pleasure, Ascetism, etc.  That simply won’t work.  That being said, let me get off of the box of soap a bit and tell you simply why dark colas are a killer for your bones.

Drinking Dark Colas…

We’ve all heard that Coca-cola can dissolve the corrosion on your car battery.  Ok.  Well, you don’t have to be an Exercise Physiologist (poking fun at myself =) to know that can’t be good for a human.  Well, it’s not.  In addition to that what about the “Dark” part of colas is so bad??  The “Phosphoric Acid.”  That’s the component in “Dark colas” that actually eats away at your bones.  Growing older and menopause are already going to do a job on your bones, they don’t need your help by drinking this acid.

Lack of Proper Resistance… And FUN SOLUTION!

What this means in terms that you’ve heard before is, “Weight-Bearing Exercise.”  That means get out and move.  It doesn’t have to literally mean “Weight lifting in the gym” so much as it means, “Moving your own body around in a way that is challenging.”  This can be as boring and horrible or as fun and exciting as you make it.  In my Bootcamps my whole point is to make it as fun as possible.  In myBoutique Bootcamps it’s to make it fun, relaxing, and pampering as possible!  You can do the same thing where ever you are. Get involved in a program or group where you have accountability, have fun, and actually enjoy getting up and being active.

If you’re already self-disciplined that’s great but I’m a Physiologist and trainer and my exercise mostly comes when I’m training someone else!!  Even I need some motivation sometimes!  If I wouldn’t be training people I’m not sure when I would get most of my movement in.  So… no one’s above having fun in a crowd =)

Reason why ‘Weight-Bearing Exercise is Important…

You’re body was created to move.  it was created to lift things, lift yourself, help people, contribute to the world, etc. It was NOT created to sit for hours on end, not move, sleep all day, etc.  Our culture, sits and drives, sits and talks, sits and thinks, sits and types (uh oh, I better get up =), sits and watches movies, etc. etc.  All of these things ( in moderation remember =) are ok but you’ve got to keep a tab on them to moderate them.  You can look at the symptoms and problems of Menopause and Osteoporosis as a reminder to you that your life is NOT OVER and that you’re just beginning!

The solution to these problems is movement, getting involved, laughing, DE-stressing, and helping people.  If you don’t do these things your body continues to break down at a rapid pace. So maybe this whole thing is a helper to you.  Use your body for what it is here for and it’ll continue to keep working for you in a way that you want it to work.  If you don’t give it something to work for then it says, “See ya later, I’m done.”

On a more physiological note, weight-bearing exercise pushes and pulls on your bones. When they receive this activity, signal, etc. it slowly but surely has to strengthen in order to not break or tear.  If you walk with bare feet on cement day in and day out your feet will get harder.  The same thing is happening with your bones but this time you WANT them to get harder/firmer.  The “walking” in this example is the exercise and the “cement” in this example, doing the hardening, is the resistance.  The resistance can be your own body weight or weights.  I don’t recommend the gym and the weight room because of all of the sitting going on in there and that’s why our boot camps are body weight and Russian Kettlebell focused.  That being said, if you can’t find a bootcamplike that then you can email me and I can try to find you one in  your area that would be good for you or if all you have is  a gym then it is certainly better than nothing.

Genetics.  The ultimate culprit…or Not?

I may get a lot of flack for this but I’ve got to be honest with you here.  Compared to your lifestyle, your choices, your activity, and your mindset, your genetics will make up about 10% of your outcome.  If that were not the case then you would not have much choice and you would just be a victim.  MOST PEOPLE want to be a victim because it takes the responsibility out of their hands and they now have an excuse to be lazy (I know this may be offensive but this is the truth and someone needs to say this).  Whether our faithful scientists prove it or not, the correlation between genetic simliarities of children and parents also includes the fact that children will live, act, and respond in a simliar way their parents did or the way they were taught.

That being said….

There ARE legitimate cases where genetics or life just happened to deal a hand where you’re doing everything right but you’re still having pains, weight gains, etc.  In those situations it’s still important to not become a victim because that IN NO WAY is going to help your situation.  However, if you look for the ways that you yourself CAN make a positive change on the factors that you can control it will give you a feeling of accomplishment, success, and have more likely of a chance to actually work on  your physical body

So, keep genetics in mind as far as taking a look at habits that may have been passed down and see what you can do to make sure you incorporate good habits and then keep up with your good actions to keep the Bad ol’ Osteo Monster away.

Tough Love and Relaxation for Your Bones…

Non Profit Stations, Perfect Source to Gain Free Radio Publicity

There are several great strategies for getting free radio publicity and/or advertising. Many of these methods are extremely simple, they are highly accessible, and, unfortunately, they are often overlooked by the people who stand to benefit from them the most.

When seeking free radio publicity and/or advertising, it is true that a great choice for marketers is establishing business relationships with smaller, local radio stations. A related and practical option for marketers is to work with non-profit stations including independent community radio. Nonprofit stations are plentiful around the United States. It has been argued that the most captivating radio available is located on the left side of the dial at frequencies from 88.1 to 91.9 megahertz.

Many of these stations belong to universities and colleges around the nation. In addition to stations aired by universities, non-profit radio stations include those run by high schools, non-profit groups, or community organizations. Many religious radio stations are non-profit. LPFM, or low-power FM, is a relatively new non-commercial radio service in the US that allows local organizations an opportunity to broadcast in an inexpensive way. LPFM stations have a smaller listening area, but they often welcome volunteer hosts and are not limited to the left side of the dial.

What makes non-profit radio stations of most interest to marketers is that each station has its own base of loyal fans including students and community members. Many college radio stations have a strong and established history in their cities or towns. For example, WSOU in South Orange, New Jersey has been on the air for well over 40 years and counting. The WSOU fans are fanatically enthusiastic listeners. The format of the station is heavy metal, but they run a variety of other programs as well.

The non-profit radio circuit is a wealth of free radio publicity and/or advertising opportunities. A marketer needs only to contact one of these stations and supply them with a reason to be invited onto a show. The stations are more than happy to allow people to plug their products or services in exchange.

The important thing for marketers to consider when choosing a non-profit station with which to work is matching the station demographic to what is being sold. If the college station appeals to heavy metal fans, like WSOU, having a product or service targeted to college age youth or adults young at heart will most likely be a successful venture. If the non-profit radio station offers religious programming, the demographic will most likely be conservative. Family oriented products or services might do very well with that specific audience.

In terms of gleaning free advertising and/or publicity from non-profit radio stations, the sky is the limit. Even though careful attention should be made to a stations demographics, community stations do tend to be highly eclectic, and they take pride in their diverse programming. They are often eager not only to welcome guest hosts but also to provide instruction and teach others how to produce radio programs. It is highly likely that, with a little effort, enterprising marketers could end up with their own radio shows with limitless marketing possibilities.

How do you think of your restaurant?

Are you thinking too small?  What are all the ways that you can use your restaurant?  What are all the ways you can use your resources, your staff, and your expertise to make money?  What are all the things you can do with everything you have available to you?

Donâ??t have an antiquated thought process of the restaurant business.  Donâ??t think that you have to get everyone to come in to your restaurant.  Times have changed and people are eating in many different ways.  Theyâ??re now microwaving things at home, running kids off to sports practice, eating in the car, etc.

There are many ways you need to think about in which your guests want to purchase food or have a wonderful dining experience.  Donâ??t limit this by what you thought of this business 20 years ago.   Think big.  Think in different ways.  Stretch your ideas and your thoughts.  Think outside the box.  You can accomplish so much more than you realize.  The people that are most successful are the ones that will change with the times.

Think big in terms of money and how you can sell what you create.

If you can imagine it, if your mind can conceive it and believe it, then you can achieve it.  As Walt Disney said, â??Itâ??s kind of fun to do the impossibleâ?.

You are only limited by what you believe and what you think.  If your thoughts are too small, thatâ??s whatâ??s manifested.  If your thoughts are big, you can manifest those thoughts.

What would you do to have a day like this:

You drive to your beautiful new restaurant thatâ??s on the corner of the busiest intersection in town. You have a big sign out front. The lot is full of cars and a line is forming at the door just to put their name on the list to be seated.

You walk into your restaurant at your usual time of 11:15 and look at the reservation book. Itâ??s packed. Your manager says that heâ??s already had a few calls this morning from customers wanting to get â??last minute catering ordersâ? (which of course you squeeze in, on your terms). Youâ??re already over-booked for this week.

Next week is already filled up too. What a great feeling! You can remember when this was your business for the whole month, not just a couple of days. Youâ??ve got great managers to handle the â??business stuffâ?? and have excellent staff handling the â??service detailsâ??

So whatâ??ll it be this afternoon â?? golfing or fishing? Hummm???

Now this is what it is to have fun as a restaurant owner! If you have to drag yourself out of bed in the morning because you hate to go to work or if youâ??re working like a dog early morning till late at night, you might as well go get a J.O.B working for someone else â?? hell, lifeâ??s too short!

Running your own business should be mentally, emotionally, and most of all â?? financially rewarding, with plenty of time to take off to go out and enjoy life!

Ah, the Warrior â?? one of the most static, well balanced classes in World of Warcraft. It receives the fewest nerfs or buffs with each major patch and it continues to play the same roles year in and year out in raiding. Yet, being an effective Warrior in PvE requires that you have a very good understanding of your class and that you practice effusively. This is where a good Warrior PvE Guide can come in and make all the difference.

What a Warrior PvE Guide Does

Warriors essentially come in three flavours, but when it comes to raiding, youâ??re going to be a Protection Warrior or a Fury Warrior (largely because of Titanâ??s Grip). Youâ??ll either be a tank or a DPS dealer.

And most Warriors become tanks because it is the quickest route into a raiding party â?? especially with the highly specialized actions that a Warrior has on hand to tank with. If youâ??re serious about raiding as a Warrior, start spending as much time as you can working on building up your strategies for the class. Practice in numerous settings, go on low level instance runs, and even if you never play as Protection while levelling, play as it when you hit level 80, just on daily quests. You need to be as acclimated as possible to the ways of the Warrior to be a good raider. The days of getting an instant spot in a raid because you are a Warrior are passed â?? itâ??s time to earn that role.

Coppell Personal Trainer and Boot Camp Health Tip: Combat Weight Gain Due to Hormone Imbalances

Hormone imbalances can have a great impact on weight – both in gaining weight and efforts to lose it.  My goal through this week’s tip is to try and simplify your understanding of how hormone imbalances come about and what you can do to correct or prevent it from happening.  

Why understanding hormone imbalances is important

Typically and in an optimal state, hormones work in perfect harmony together to help keep your body running smoothly and healthy.  When just one hormone is out of balance, it can cause all sorts of problems.  Many times these imbalances can and often do lead to weight gain.  
As a person that has dealt with weight gain, I know the challenges of trying to shed unwanted pounds and keep them off.  When losing weight would finally become a priority for me, I would work really hard to try and lose weight using previously tried successful methods.  However, as I got older, previous diets would not work for me and just seemed to be harder and harder to lose the pounds.  

When I retired in April of 2007, focusing on my overall health and wellness became a priority for me.  I was determined to get in shape and lose weight once and for all!  In addition, as a woman rapidly approaching my 50’s, I know I am going to face even more challenges as the menopause years loom ahead of me.  

About this same time, I also started listening more closely to the troubles other women faced as they aged and struggled with weight gain. “It must be hormone related” was the common response I heard to “Why can’t I lose weight?”  Hearing these comments combined with my own issues, got me interested in learning more about the role women’s hormones play in weight gain and more importantly, what we can do to lose the weight.
Hormones:  Simplified (I hope!)

Our bodies produce many hormones, but there are three hormones in particular that play a key role in aging and weight gain:  Insulin, stress (adrenaline and cortisol are the primary stress hormones), and estrogen hormones.

Insulin plays a huge role within our bodies as it relates to metabolism and body fat.  Its main job is to regulate the absorption of sugar (or glucose) into our body’s cells.  Glucose is our body’s primary source of energy or “fuel” and is needed to perform any physical task. What we put into our bodies makes a big difference on how well insulin can perform its function.    

Sugar gets in our bodies through carbohydrates (carbs).  Foods in their natural state, (such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains) are the “good carbs”.  “Bad carbs” are those foods that are refined and processed.  Typically, most of the nutritional value has been stripped from these foods.   When are diets regularly consist of bad carbs, over time this type of eating behavior can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. “When you are insulin resistant your body converts every calorie it can into fat — even if you’re dieting. And it won’t let you burn fat when you exercise.”¹  

The type of food we eat isn’t the only thing that can disrupt the balance of our hormones.  Stress hormones kick into high gear when our bodies perceive some type of external threat. A threat can be anything from stubbing your toe to a blow to the head.  As soon as your body perceives a threat, stress hormones block off or suppress many processes within our bodies, including our digestive process.  When we experience a prolonged state of stress, our system goes into what is sometimes referred to as the “famine effect”: “despite adequate food, the body interprets prolonged stress as a famine, and once again, the body thinks it should store every spare calorie as fat.”¹

Everyone has stress in their life.  How we deal with it determines whether or not our stress hormones become imbalanced.  
Natural changes women go through in our lives do not always cause a hormone imbalance.  However, as we age, the estrogen hormone that is produced in a woman’s ovaries, begin to produce less and less.  During this slowed production time, our body naturally looks for someplace else to produce estrogen, such as within other organs, our skin or guess what?  Body fat!  Yes, our fat cells can produce estrogen.  

If a woman carries extra body fat, in particular in their belly, the situation often becomes exacerbated because these now estrogen producing fat cells have even more reason to stay put!  Even more worrisome is that excessive estrogen production is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer.  The same risks that is found in people that carry too much weight around their bellies!  See the connection?

How to fight back and return your hormones to perfect harmony

Hopefully you see the connection these hormones have and their importance to our ability to fight the spread of our middle as we age.  Given our lifestyles today, it is no wonder our hormones are out of balance.  The access to fast foods and easy quick meals is too convenient.  Couple a bad diet with the daily stress we all face in trying to juggle families, careers, spouses and a social life. Even if we do have a good handle on these two areas of our life, no woman can stop the aging clock.  It’s no wonder so many adult women feel they are in a no win situation in their struggle with weight gain.  

•   First, focus on a healthy diet.  One that consists of lean meat, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lots of veggies and fruits as well as healthy oils and minimized alcohol intake.
By simply changing what you put in your body, you will immediately begin to see changes in how you feel.  You will have more energy, (which will allow you to deal with your stress better), you will most likely sleep better, (adding further to your energy level) and you may even start to lose weight!  By putting good calories in your body, your insulin will quit converting the calories to fat and allow your body to begin burning calories.
•   Second and very simply put – just move!  Start walking.  Dance around the house.  Stretch.  Join a gym.  Buy some inexpensive workout DVD’s.  Hire a personal trainer of find a local fitness boot camp. Just do something.  Start with 10 minutes a day and gradually add 5 minutes to your day.  You don’t have to exercise all at once either.  Break it up throughout the day.  Whenever you can get 10 minutes in.  However, eventually try to get in at least 30 minutes per day.

By adding exercise to your daily routine combined with a healthy diet you will begin to see a change in how you feel and your overall appearance.  Give it time though.  Those extra pounds didn’t appear in just 2 weeks or a month, so don’t expect to lose it all in that amount of time.  Expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week and in no time, you will have the results you have been wanting.
