Bryce Milligan Book Launch

Bryce Milligan Book Launch
Event on 2016-10-27 19:00:00
Join us in celebrating the launch of Bryce Milligan’s Take to the Highway: Arabesques for Travelers, a collection of poems and prose poems. With readings from Bryce Milligan and W. Joe Hoppe, and music from Bryce.

“Bryce Milligan’s Take to the Highway is a book of big heart, big mind, and a big eight-cylinder engine, bringing poems—especially the stretched out prose poems—of distinction and evocative power.” —Jane Hirshfield, author of The Beauty and Ten Windows

“Take to the Highway is indeed about highways, but more crucially it’s about journeys, and about the intricate memory map of human consciousness. It’s a great pleasure to follow Bryce Milligan along side roads, detours, switchbacks, and eerily beckoning paths; and to encounter at the end a design, a destination, a questing mind at peace.” —Stephen Harrigan, author of The Gates of the Alamo

Bryce Milligan is an author working in numerous genres, from children’s books to novels for young adults, to adult poetry and criticism. A member of the National Book Critics Circle, PEN American Center, and the Texas Institute of Letters, his reviews and essays have appeared in many journals and newspapers, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Dallas Morning News, et al. The founding editor of Pax: A Journal for Peace through Culture (1983-1987) and (with Roberto Bonazzi) Vortex: A Critical Review (1986-1990), he directed the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s literature program and its San Antonio Inter-American Book Fair and Latina Letters conferences for several years. Milligan has been the publisher, editor and book designer of Wings Press since 1995. Milligan was the primary editor of Daughters of the Fifth Sun: A Collection of Latina Fiction and Poetry (Riverhead, 1995), which was the first all-Latina anthology to be published by a major American publishing house. He is the author of four historical novels and short story collections for young adults. He is also the author of six previous collections of poetry. His poetry and his song lyrics have appeared in numerous literary magazines, including Southwest Review, Asheville Poetry Review, Cutthroat, Clover, and Texas Observer, among others. Once upon a time, he was a working luthier and a singer/songwriter (twice a semi-finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folks songwriting competition). He has taught English and creative writing at every level, including workshops from California to Prague. Milligan is a recipient of the Gemini Ink “Award for Literary Excellence” and the St. Mary’s University President’s Peace Commission’s “Art of Peace Award” for “creating work that enhances human understanding through the arts.”

W. Joe Hoppe’s poems have appeared in Analecta, Borderlands, Cider Press Review, Di*Verse*Cities, Nerve Cowboy, Utter, and The Blanton Museum of Art’s Poetry Project. His poems have been anthologized in Stand Up Poetry, How to be This Man, gumballpoetry.com, and Beatest State in the Union. Joe’s one-of-a-kind poetry video, “00 MSTA,” has been shown at the Dallas Video Festival, San Antonio Underground Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, and VideoEx in Zurich, Switzerland. His books include a collection of short stories, Harmon Place (1991) from Primal Press, a poetry collection, Galvanized (2007), from Dalton Publishing, and a second poetry collection, Diamond Plate (2012), from Obsolete Press. Hoppe is the Poet Lariat of Austin’s intellectual variety show The Dionysium. He has hosted numerous poetry events at Austin’s Malvern Books, including interviews of local poets, a reading and discussion of Emily Dickinson, a communal performance of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl celebrating its 60th anniversary, and an annual memorial reading for the late, great Austin poet Albert Huffstickler. He is currently finishing up a four-year effort to get a customized ’51 Plymouth Cranbrook roadworthy for a trip down Route 66 in the summer of 2017. Hoppe is an Associate Professor in English and Creative Writing at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas.

The Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) is an interferometer array of radio telescopes spread across England. The array is run from Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire by the University of Manchester on behalf of STFC as a National Facility.

The array consists of up to seven radio telescopes and includes the Lovell Telescope, Mark II, Cambridge, Defford, Knockin, Darnhall and Pickmere (previously known as Tabley). The longest baseline is therefore 217 km and MERLIN can operate at frequencies between 151 MHz and 24 GHz. At a wavelength of 6 cm (5 GHz frequency), MERLIN has a resolution of 40 milliarcseconds which is comparable to that of the HST at optical wavelengths. From 1990 MERLIN’s most distant outpost, at Cambridge, has a new purpose-built telescope with a bowl 32 metres in diameter.

In 1957, the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory (MRAO) was built 8 kilometres south-west of Cambridge, at Lord’s Bridge, through the generosity of Mullard Limited. The work of the MRAO was recognised by the award of the 1974 Nobel Prize for Physics to Professor Ryle and to Professor Antony Hewish – the first time that a Nobel Prize had been awarded for astronomical research.

Drive-By Truckers Tickets – Country Rockers Launch 2010 ‘to Do’ List

Drive-By Truckers Tickets – Country Rockers Launch 2010 ‘to Do’ List

Georgia country rockers the Drive-By Truckers have been an edgy staple on the Southern rock scene for the last decade, and the six-piece megaband is showing the nation “The Big To-Do,” the name of their brand new album and current tour. The Drive-By Truckers are slated to release The Big To-Do, their 10th studio album, on March 16, and they kicked off their most recent slew of tour dates on March 12 in their home state of Georgia.

The aptly-titled album The Big To-Do has already raised eyebrows on the country music scene, and the Drive-By Truckers’ classic gritty country-meets-rock style is sure to catch on with an even larger nationwide audience in the upcoming months, as the band’s tour takes the sextet from West Coast to East Coast and even to Canada and back. The band’s current tour, slated to run through July, will include select dates with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, a staple touring act year after year. The band has also been making public appearances on several late-night shows, including Late Show with David Letterman, on which they made a cameo March 12, and also Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which they’ll grace with their presence on March 31.

Anyone who’s gotten Drive-By Truckers tickets to any of this raucous band’s several live shows over the years has surely noticed their incredible energy and musical talent. The Drive-By Truckers tread a fine line between alternative rock and classic country, making them one red-hot act that’s carved out a unique niche over time.

Propelled by a hard-hitting sound and Southern rock appeal, the Drive-By Truckers have a grip on the music industry thanks to a three-guitar assault, combining classic rock with folk and traditional country music styles to handcraft a freewheeling style all their own. Formed from a collection of Southern musicians, the Drive-By Truckers assembled in the late 1990s, striking a chord with country-rock fans in a style reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

1998’s Gangastabilly established the Drive-By Truckers as a legitimate country music band, and by 2003 the band had inked a deal with New West Records, Inc., a Texas-based label that helped promote this burgeoning superband. From this point on, the Drive-By Truckers became a well-known asset to Southern rock fans, and in 2006 the crew’s album A Blessing and a Cure had reached No. 3 on the Independent Albums chart.

Since then, the Drive-By Truckers have been an absolute asset to the music industry, with 2008’s Brighter Than Creation’s Dark even hitting No. 37 on the Billboard 200. The Georgia-based band’s 2010 release The Big To-Do is sure to be jam-packed with just as many boot-stompin’, redneck-loving songs as any release, and with a song list including tracks with titles “This F***ing Job,” “The Fourth Night of My Drinking” and “Daddy Learned to Fly,” The Big To-Do is sure to be – well, a big to-do. While the Drive-By Truckers’ new album continues to garner a cult following, country music fans can cash in by snatching tickets to upcoming Drive-By Truckers concerts from StubHub.
