Question by Winston Smith: Has the internet made people’s opinions more extreme?
There’s no middle ground on message boards or in chat — it’s pure black and white hate and love. With extreme positions usually comes extreme emotions, not conducive to cool and balanced deliberation.
Did this come before or after “hate radio” and “propaganda talk radio”? Did the internet up the vitriole and invective 100 fold, or did the broadcast media get there first?
Anyone?
The best example I can think of of “hate radio”, in my lifetime, is a commentator trying in a daily set of broadcasts to singlehandedly destroy a president who is doing a good job for his 8 years, but on whom you’ve dug up sexual dirt and gossip and want to get the nation onbaord your personal effort to railroad him out of office. Hate radio, that I recall, really took off during Clinton’s presidency. It’s embodied then and now by Rush Limbaugh. People talked about Clinton as if he was Hitler. And now, when Bush gets the same treatment — not really any more or less abusive — conservatives become sensitive sorts who care about things like hate and negative speech for the first time ever.
Hogwash.
Both sides dish and then can’t take. That isn’t my point. My point is that fewer people than ever seem to have a calm and fair POV anymore. And whom do we blame for that?
The mention of Father Coughlin is interesting. Thanks for that.

Hate radio has been around way longer than the internet. (Father Coughlin from the Great Depression comes to mind.) And vitriolic pamphlets and publications have been around for hundreds of years. (Read some of Martin Luther’s stuff against the pope from the 16th century).
I don’t think the internet is anything new as far as heated, nasty, partisan journalism and opinion. It’s actually more of a return to the way things were before the era of the 50’s with the “omniscient” voice of the single broadcaster telling everyone what was what.
The internet has helped return the power of the press to regular people, not just a few news outlets run by the elite and wealthy. That inevitably means more bickering and emotionally charged opinion, because not everyone is falling into line behind the official position of the rulers of the press.
It’d be nice to see people use more reasoning instead of personal attacks in their arguments. I think part of the reason people are so nasty on the internet, is because their anonymous.

When I hear the city name, Nashville, the first impression that comes to mind is, of course, country music, Elvis and the Grand Ole Opry. Well, as you search into just a few of the attractions in and around Nashville, these are at the top of the list, but certainly not the end. A look at what this Country Music Capitol has to offer will get any vacationer excited.
The number one attraction for Tennessee is naturally the Grand Ole Opry, where country music legends and today’s top musicians both perform shows for fans of all ages. In one year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to hear performances on this world famous stage. You’ll be sure to hear a wide range of country music, including some the newest stars, oldest favorites, bluegrass, comedy, and gospel. Many unplanned, memorable moments have come due to the variety of Opry members performing all in one evening. The list of members is long and full of names we all know, such as Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, and Carrie Underwood. Be sure to check the calendar at the Opry before you make your travels to Nashville.
If you are interested in staying at a luxury hotel or just seeing a landmark resort with a nine acre in-door garden, you can visit the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. Located on the Cumberland River, this beautiful and lavish resort has waterfalls and a “river” complete with paddleboat within its walls. As can be expected, you will also find a variety of restaurants, shops, and a full spa and fitness center. While you are on the banks of the river, you can check out the General Jackson Showboat, a four-story river paddleboat. Described as grand, you’ll enjoy luxury on the river and can see a live show in the Victorian theatre.
If you would like to spend some time finding super deals at almost any store, you will want to visit the Opry Mills Outlet Mall, also located on the Cumberland River. This sprawling mall has upscale shops such as Saks Fifth Avenue and discounts at tons of everyday stores such as the Gap and fun, creative places like Build-a-Bear. Complete your experience with a selection of restaurants and movie or IMAX theatres.
Moving into the city, you will find the Country Music Hall of Fame covering an entire city block in downtown Nashville. Home to Elvis Presley’s famous Cadillac, as well as live performances, and loads of country music memorabilia. You will leave with a picture of country music through the years, laid out in exciting exhibits and historic video clips.
If you are planning to visit Tennessee with children, there are many attractions for adults and youth. Take some time to enjoy the wild at the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere, home to over 350 animals. Step into nature with the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, full of beautiful flowers and plants sure to amaze. To see not only a wonderful art museum, but interactive art center, head to the First Center for the Visual Arts. This center teaches all ages through activity and hands-on learning. Arthur Court is No More Just King Arthur’s Court
When you hear the word Arthur Court, you are likely to think of King Arthur of ancient England and his famous court of heroic (and not so heroic) knights. In the modern age, however, Arthur Court has become a recognized brand for an elegant range of products.
The brand is now most closely associated with the products offered by Arthur Court Designs of USA. You would find their products in Department and Specialty Gift Stores all over USA, and also at reputed international outlets and online stores.
The product range includes hundreds of “design” products that include American Traditional serve ware, traditional accessories like carving knives and wine cooler, and many decorative products. The company reports that over 500 designs are available.
Traditionally, products of this category were made of silver, and silver ware has come to be associated with elegance and prestige. Arthur Court was a pioneer in the use of alternative metal, aluminum, to create similar looking, sculpted products with a brilliant polished luster typically associated with silver.
These aluminum products do not need regular polishing as required by silver products. The company advises against using dishwasher to wash the ware, as heat would dull the brilliant luster of the products. Instead, hand washing using mild dishwashing soap is recommended.
Intriguing Series
The products are offered under different “series”, with interesting or intriguing names, and catering to the varied tastes of consumers.
There is an American Wilderness series that includes a wine cooler shaped like a fox while an autumn series offer products for the Halloween season, such as a Halloween Tea Light Holder, pumpkin bowl and ghost-shaped salt and pepper set.
Natural objects have inspired other products. There is a bamboo series made of wood, decorated with attached patterns in the alternative metal. A bunny series featuring bunnies include stocking holders and other decorative products, an African Safari series include monkeys, elephants and alligators, and a Frog series prominently feature the frog shape.
Then there is a Collegiate series with licensed collegiate products for specific schools, featuring the insignia of the school teams.
The Cross series offer intricately patterned crosses for use as wall, standing or wedding crosses.
There are several other series such as Dragonfly, Fleur De Lis, Grape, Longhorn, Pineapple and Palm Leaf, Rooster, Tuscan and Western.
Yet other series like Dinnerware, Arthur Court Kitchen and Large Animal Coolers clearly bring out the functions of products they include.
Handmade Products
Each piece is individually crafted by hand according to the company. Such hand crafting makes each piece a unique piece, a little different from other similar pieces.
The Arthur Court Brand
The range of elegant, hand crafted products, catering to different themes and interests, and made of a material that resembles the traditional silver of prestigious silver ware, has apparently caught the fancy of consumers. Arthur Court has become a brand recognized internationally, and is no more confined to the court of the ancient King of English legends.
