Please join us for a courtyard reading followed by a book signing. 2016 OHIOANA BOOK AWARD WINNER: FICTION “With vast amounts of research and a poetic prose line … Russell has crafted an epic tale … a stunning performance.”—Washington Post “Whatever it is you think you know about the gunfight at the OK Corral, however it is you think you feel about it, forget it all… Mary Doria Russell has 600 pages to burn a fresh understanding into you, and she uses every one of them.” —NPR, Best Books of 2015 “In depth, scope and nuance, Mary Doria Russell’s Epitaph is the best novel yet on the near-mythical events of the Wild West’s most famous silver boomtown.” —Dallas Morning News Mary Doria Russell, the bestselling, award-winning author of The Sparrow, returns with Epitaph. An American Iliad, this richly detailed and meticulously researched historical novel continues the story she began in Doc, following Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday to Tombstone, Arizona, and to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. A deeply divided nation. Vicious politics. A shamelessly partisan media. A president loathed by half the populace. Smuggling and gang warfare along the Mexican border. Armed citizens willing to stand their ground and take law into their own hands. . . . That was America in 1881. All those forces came to bear on the afternoon of October 26 when Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers faced off against the Clantons and the McLaurys in Tombstone, Arizona. It should have been a simple misdemeanor arrest. Thirty seconds and thirty bullets later, three officers were wounded and three citizens lay dead in the dirt. Wyatt Earp was the last man standing, the only one unscathed. The lies began before the smoke cleared, but the gunfight at the O.K. Corral would soon become central to American beliefs about the Old West. Epitaph tells Wyatt’s real story, unearthing the Homeric tragedy buried under 130 years of mythology, misrepresentation, and sheer indifference to fact. Epic and intimate, this novel gives voice to the real men and women whose lives were changed forever by those fatal thirty seconds in Tombstone. At its heart is the woman behind the myth: Josephine Sarah Marcus, who loved Wyatt Earp for forty-nine years and who carefully chipped away at the truth until she had crafted the heroic legend that would become the epitaph her husband deserved. Mary Doria Russell is the author of five previous books, The Sparrow, Children of God, A Thread of Grace, Dreamers of the Day, and Doc, all critically acclaimed commercial successes. Dr. Russell holds a PhD in biological anthropology. She lives in Lyndhurst, Ohio

The Los Angeles Angels have an opportunity to get back above .500 with nine consecutive games against a pair of last-place clubs.

If Dan Haren can continue his resurgence, the Angels could have a good shot to get that stretch off to a strong start Monday night against the Cleveland Indians.

The Angels (66-71) have gone 7-14 in their last 21 games, putting them in danger of finishing with their first losing record since going 77-85 in 2003. Los Angeles has won at least 89 games a season in the six years since.

The Angels host the Indians for three games before taking on Seattle for three contests and then facing Cleveland again at Progressive Field. Los Angeles is 14-5 against those clubs in 2010.

After batting .176 in the previous eight games, the Angels got 11 hits in a 7-4 victory over Oakland on Sunday. Hideki Matsui had three hits, Bobby Abreu homered and drove in three runs and Mike Napoli added a two-run shot.

“This is the offensive day we’ve been looking for in quite some time,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “It was a good day to get it.”

Los Angeles had scored one or no runs in its six losses over the previous eight games.

If Haren can duplicate the results of his past two starts, Scioscia’s team might not need to score much Monday. The right-hander has gone 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in his past two outings, though he was a victim of the Angels’ lack of offense Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless innings in a 3-1 loss at Seattle.

Haren (2-4, 3.50 ERA) went 1-4 with a 4.39 ERA in his first six starts with Los Angeles, capping that stretch by allowing seven runs and a season-high 11 hits in a 7-2 loss at Minnesota on Aug. 20.

“I’ve worked hard, a lot of work on the side with (pitching coach Mike Butcher),” Haren told the team’s website. “I feel like I used to feel. The ball’s coming out a lot better. I can tell when I’m getting swings and misses when I need them that my stuff’s good. It’s nice to see the work pay off.”

Haren will make his first start against the Indians (55-82) since a 9-3 win with Oakland on Sept. 22, 2007, and will face a team that’s dropped 19 of 27. He is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA in six career starts versus Cleveland.

The Indians lost 3-0 to Seattle on Sunday, managing four singles against Felix Hernandez. Cleveland had 12 hits in a 6-3 win over the Mariners on Thursday, but batted .167 over the final three games of the series.

“If I win 100 games, I don’t care if the 62 losses are shutouts,” manager Manny Acta told the team’s website. “What I care about is winning and losing.”

Acta’s club has dropped eight of 11 on the road and 12 of 18 in Anaheim, losing two of three there from April 26-28.

Carlos Carrasco (0-0, 3.68) will try to get Cleveland back in the win column as he makes his seventh major league start and second this season.

The right-hander, who has never faced the Angels, allowed three runs over 7 1/3 innings of a 6-4 loss to Chicago on Wednesday. He’s 0-4 with a 7.58 ERA in his career, going 0-2 with a 12.79 ERA in two road starts.

The sputtering Boston Red Sox don’t have much of a chance to make the playoffs. The Tampa Bay Rays have an opportunity to make that all but impossible.

As the Rays continue their battle for first place in the AL East, they can deal the Red Sox’s postseason hopes another devastating blow during a three-game series starting Monday night at Fenway Park.
WATCH LIVE NOW

Tampa Bay (83-53) fell 2 1/2 games behind New York in the division over the weekend, dropping two of three to Baltimore. The Rays lost the last two games and missed a chance to cut into the deficit Sunday when the Yankees lost.

Tampa Bay gave up eight runs in each of the final two games to the last-place Orioles, suffering an 8-7 defeat Sunday despite hitting four home runs.

While the Rays fell further out of first, they padded their wild-card lead over the Red Sox (76-61), who were swept in three games at home by Chicago. Tampa Bay is seven games ahead of the White Sox in the wild-card race and 7 1/2 ahead of Boston.

“It’s not about looking back at (the Red Sox), it’s about looking forward at the Yankees,” manager Joe Maddon told the Rays’ official website. “I want us to keep in mind that we’re trying to win the division, period. It’s not about worrying about the Red Sox catching us, it’s about us catching the Yankees, and I would prefer that kind of outlook.”

The Rays have gone 5-1 at Fenway Park this season and lead the season series 10-5. Tampa Bay took two of three in the last matchup Aug. 27-29 at Tropicana Field.

After failing to get a quality start over the weekend, Tampa Bay will hand the ball to Jeff Niemann (10-5, 3.97 ERA), who struggled for the second straight time since coming off the disabled list Tuesday. He gave up seven runs in five innings of a 13-5 loss to Toronto.

In his previous outing, he allowed 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings of a 12-3 loss to Los Angeles on Aug. 25.

The right-hander, however, has pitched well against the Red Sox this year, going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts.

He’ll look to continue a stretch of strong Tampa Bay pitching against Boston. Rays starters have gone 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA while the club has won four of the last five meetings.

The Red Sox have lost six of eight and suffered a stunning 7-5 loss Sunday. Chicago scored four runs in the ninth inning off Jonathan Papelbon, who was charged with his seventh blown save of the season. Robert Manuel, the second reliever to follow Papelbon, walked in two with the bases loaded.

Victor Martinez homered and Adrian Beltre went 3 for 4 for the Red Sox, who had 11 hits after totaling 13 in a doubleheader Saturday.

Boston will hand the ball to Jon Lester (15-8, 3.27), who has won four of his last five starts.

The left-hander wasn’t dominant in his last outing Wednesday, allowing five runs and eight hits in six innings, but won 9-6 at Baltimore.

Lester is 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in three starts against the Rays this year, and 8-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 career matchups with them. He has won four of his last five starts versus Tampa Bay, giving up two runs or fewer in those victories.

Lester, though, is 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA against the Rays at Fenway, and he’s lost his last four starts at home with a 7.71 ERA.

The Philadelphia Phillies haven’t been alone atop the NL East in more than three months. They could end up back in that position Monday as they host the Florida Marlins for a day-night doubleheader.

Philadelphia (78-59) has won eight of 10 to get within one game of Atlanta for the division lead. If the Braves lose at Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon, the Phillies will own sole possession of first place for the first time since May 30 if they sweep this twinbill.
WATCH LIVE NOW

Their recent success is due in part to the resurgence of slugger Ryan Howard, who was in a 2-for-28 slump before hitting three homers and driving in six runs over the last six games.

Howard’s bat has generally been known to heat up in September, as he has a .306 average with 51 homers — the most of any month in his career.

“There’s the saying the season is a marathon,” Howard told the Phillies’ official website. “You want to try to be strong at the end of the race, and kick it in during the home stretch.”

That’s exactly what Roy Oswalt (10-13, 3.01 ERA) has been doing for the Phillies. He’ll start the nightcap looking for his fifth straight win.

Oswalt is 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA since being acquired from Houston just before the trade deadline, and he’s given up one run over his past 21 1/3 innings. He allowed one hit in 6 1/3 scoreless innings and struck out six in a 5-1 win over Los Angeles on Wednesday.

“He’s been a lights-out pitcher — especially in the second half — as his career has shown,” Jimmy Rollins said after Oswalt’s last outing. “He’s very consistent in that regard. When August and September comes around, the man just dominates. And that’s what we need — pitchers like that who want to pitch in big games. And we have him.”

The three-time All Star is 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA versus the Marlins (69-66), but he’s 0-2 with an 8.86 ERA in four outings against them since a win Aug. 3, 2007. Hanley Ramirez is 10 for 25 with two homers against Oswalt and enters this matchup on a tear, batting .481 in his last 15 games.

Anibal Sanchez (11-8, 3.14) is scheduled to oppose Oswalt. He allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings for the second time in three starts Tuesday, throwing a career-high 126 pitches with one walk and seven strikeouts in a 1-0, 10-inning victory.

Sanchez has struggled against the Phillies, posting a 3-6 record with a 5.20 ERA in 10 outings. His last start against Philadelphia came Aug. 4, when he allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 7-2 loss.

Howard didn’t even play in that game, and he’s 6 for 18 with two homers, two doubles and seven walks versus Sanchez.

The first game of the doubleheader matches two pitchers making their first major league starts in Philadelphia’s Vance Worley and Florida’s Adalberto Mendez.

Worley (0-0, 0.00) made his only appearance in the majors July 24, striking out two in a perfect inning of relief in a 10-2 win over Colorado. The rookie right-hander was 10-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 26 starts between Triple A-Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading this season.

Mendez has never pitched in the big leagues. He was 5-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 28 games at Triple-A New Orleans this year.

The Marlins have won three of five games at Citizens Bank Park this year and are 15-8 there over the last three seasons.

As recently as Aug. 28, the San Francisco Giants trailed by six games in the NL West. That deficit is now down to one and a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks could help the Giants climb to the top of their division before a pivotal showdown.

San Francisco will first try to take a share of that lead with its fifth consecutive road victory over the last-place Diamondbacks in Monday’s opener of a three-game set.

The Giants (76-61) have the fifth-best record in the majors since July 4 at 35-21 but have benefited more of late from San Diego’s stunning 10-game slide. In that time, San Francisco has sliced four games off the Padres’ lead by winning five of seven, including Sunday’s 3-0 victory at Los Angeles.
WATCH LIVE NOW

The Giants, who have a 2.21 ERA over the last six games, limited the Dodgers to three hits, and Juan Uribe homered for the second straight contest. His two-run shot in the ninth inning Saturday lifted San Francisco to a 5-4 win.

“This is big to come in here and take a series,” manager Bruce Bochy said.

San Francisco hasn’t seen first place since May 6 and has a chance to claim that spot for good with four games in San Diego beginning Thursday. First, though, the Giants will try to add to their recent success against the Diamondbacks (56-81).

San Francisco has won 21 of 30 meetings since the start of last season and 10 of 15 in Arizona. They hold an 8-4 edge in this season’s series.

Arizona, however, took two of three from San Francisco on Aug. 27-29 as part of a 7-1 stretch but has dropped consecutive games heading into this series. The Diamondbacks went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Houston.

The Diamondbacks hope for better production Monday but that could be difficult if top power hitter Mark Reynolds and outfielder Justin Upton are out. Reynolds left in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss after aggravating a bone bruise in his right hand, and Upton has missed the past five games with an ailing left shoulder.

Should Reynolds and Upton miss the opener, Madison Bumgarner (5-4, 3.76 ERA) will try to take advantage by earning his second win in as many starts against Arizona. The left-hander allowed two runs over seven innings during a 10-4 victory at Chase Field on July 24 and is coming off one of his better outings this season.

After getting tagged for eight runs by Cincinnati on Aug. 25, he yielded one run and five hits over six innings Tuesday against Colorado but did not get a decision in a 5-2 win.

Ian Kennedy (9-9, 4.20) will try to outduel Bumgarner while extending his career-best win streak to four. The right-hander has a 2.77 ERA over his last four starts and gave up three runs over seven innings in Tuesday’s 7-4 win over San Diego.

Kennedy is 1-1 with a 3.05 ERA in three starts this season against San Francisco and gave up four runs over 6 2/3 innings during the July 24 loss.

The Seattle Mariners are mired in one of the franchise’s worst scoring slumps and facing Oakland’s Brett Anderson isn’t likely to help.

The Mariners look to snap a five-game losing streak in Oakland when they open a three-game series against the Athletics on Monday.
WATCH LIVE NOW

A weak offense has been an issue all season for Seattle, which ranks last in the majors in batting average (.236) and runs per game (3.2). Generating offense has been even more of a problem lately with the team scoring three or fewer runs in 10 straight games, the second-longest streak in franchise history. The longest is 12 games set June 10-22, 1988.

“Sometimes I think it’s coincidence more than anything else and sometimes there might be a feeling of you may not have to score very many because you know how good the guy is on the mound,” manager Daren Brown said after a 3-0 win over Cleveland on Sunday.

Felix Hernandez overcame the lack of support, striking out nine over eight innings to help the Mariners earn a split of the four-game series with the Indians.

Seattle (54-83) hasn’t fared much better at the plate against Anderson (3-6, 3.17 ERA), who opens the series for Oakland (67-69) on Monday. The Mariners have hit .203 in three games against him, but have managed to win two of those contests.

Anderson, who is 1-1 in those outings with a 0.47 ERA, has lost his last four decisions, including a defeat to Seattle on Aug. 10 in which he gave up one run in seven innings of a 2-0 loss.

The left-hander allowed four runs — one earned — in six innings of a 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. Anderson has a 3.21 ERA over his last five starts but is winless during that span due mainly to an offense that has supported him with seven total runs.

On Monday, he may not be able to count on one of the team’s hottest hitters to be healthy. Kevin Kouzmanoff left Sunday’s 7-4 loss to the Angels in the fifth inning with lower back spasms. It’s not known if Kouzmanoff, who has four homers and 12 RBIs in the last 12 games, will play Monday.

Oakland dropped the finale of its series against the Angels after winning the first two games. It entered the weekend having lost four in a row on the road against the Yankees.

The Athletics will try to bounce back against Jason Vargas (9-8, 3.55 ERA), who has lost his last three starts.

Vargas gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings of a 4-2 loss to the Angels on Wednesday. The left-hander has a 6.52 ERA over his last three starts after going 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA to open August.

Vargas made his first start against Oakland on April 14, allowing two runs in six innings of a 4-2 win.
