The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies finished first and second in the NL West last season to both reach the playoffs. A year later, they are struggling to stay in contention.

The division rivals open a three-game set at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, as the Dodgers look to continue their recent dominance of the Rockies.

Los Angeles (60-59) won 95 games to capture the West in 2009, with Colorado (61-56) finishing three games back to take the wild card.Watch Colorado Rockies vs Los Angeles Dodgers live stream mlb online broadcast august 17 2010

One year later, first-place San Diego leads the third-place Rockies by nine games and the fourth-place Dodgers by 11. Three clubs are ahead of both teams for the wild card.

Los Angeles is 27-15 against division foes, and 18-6 against Colorado since the start of last season. The Dodgers won four of six meetings in May, including two victories by Tuesday’s starter Clayton Kershaw (10-7, 3.17 ERA).

Kershaw posted a 1.38 ERA in those games, and enters with a 22-inning scoreless streak at home against Colorado. He has struck out 25 in that span while yielding eight hits and 14 walks.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a 4.58 ERA in his last three outings. Kershaw gave up two runs over 6 2/3 innings and did not get a decision in a 10-9 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday.

He outdueled Jhoulys Chacin (5-8, 4.04) on May 30 in a 4-3 road victory by allowing two runs over five innings while Chacin gave up four in 5 1-3. Chacin beat the Dodgers on May 8, yielding six hits over 7 1/3 innings in an 8-0 rout at Los Angeles.

The right-hander is taking the place of Jeff Francis, who was placed on the disabled list Saturday with left shoulder soreness. Chacin was sent to Triple-A Colorado Springs on July 24 after going 5-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts before being demoted to the bullpen after a July 2 outing against San Francisco.

Los Angeles dropped five of six to end a seven-game road trip, and was stifled in a four-game series against Atlanta. The Dodgers totaled six runs to lose three of four, blowing a two-run, ninth-inning lead in Monday night’s 4-3 loss.

Colorado has been a different team at home and on the road. The Rockies lead the majors with a .298 home average at hitter-friendly Coors Field, and are one of the worst teams in the majors on the road at .232.

Troy Tulowitzki’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Colorado to a 6-5 victory over Milwaukee on Sunday. Second baseman Clint Barmes’ error in the top half of the inning allowed the tying run to score with two outs.

“The statement of the club to come back and do what it did, and pick up an incredible teammate speaks volumes as to who they are and what they’ve been about for a long period of time,” manager Jim Tracy told the Rockies’ official website.

Just days ago, the St. Louis Cardinals were brimming with confidence and looked like the favorite to win the NL Central after pulling off a convincing sweep to vault into first place.

Repeating as division champs no longer looks so simple.

Back in second place, the Cardinals try to avoid losing three straight for the first time in more than three weeks when they open a two-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.Watch Milwaukee Brewers vs St. Louis Cardinals live stream mlb online broadcast august 17

With last week’s emphatic sweep in Cincinnati, St. Louis (65-51) made up three games in the standings to take a one-game lead over the Reds. It seemed to represent a shift of power within the division, but the veteran Cardinals were unable to carry any momentum into a weekend series against lowly Chicago.

By losing two of three to the Cubs coupled with Cincinnati’s three-game sweep of Florida, St. Louis has dropped a game off the pace.

“It’s not over,” manager Tony La Russa said after Sunday’s 9-7 defeat. “It’s going to be a contest to the end.”

The Cardinals, who haven’t dropped three in a row since July 22-24, hope to regroup against a Brewers team they’re 6-4 against this year. Albert Pujols is hitting only .278 in those 10 games but has six home runs and 14 RBIs.

Pujols has been putting up similarly gaudy numbers lately. The NL’s two-time reigning MVP, who became the first player to hit 30 homers in his first 10 seasons with a solo shot Sunday, is batting .455 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs in his last 13 games.

“I don’t know how long he has to play to be one of the greatest that’s ever played this game,” La Russa said. “But he’s certainly going to be in the conversation.”

Pujols is 5 for 12 with two doubles since 2008 against scheduled starter Dave Bush (5-10, 4.78 ERA), who is coming off a disastrous outing.

In Wednesday’s 8-2 loss to Arizona, Bush gave up four consecutive home runs in a 10-pitch span in the fourth inning and allowed seven runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander has a 7.52 ERA in his last five starts after posting a 2.39 ERA in his previous six.

Trying to turn things around at Busch Stadium might not be easy for Bush, who has recorded a 10.57 ERA in losing all three starts there.

In his only start of the season against the Cardinals on April 9 at Miller Park, Bush didn’t receive a decision after allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-4 loss.

The Cardinals counter with Jaime Garcia (10-5, 4.78), who gave up four runs, two hits and matched a season worst with five walks in 5 1/3 innings of an 8-4 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday. The left-hander has yielded at least four runs in each of his last two starts after giving up that many in just two of his previous 17.

Garcia is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in three starts against Milwaukee this season.

The Brewers (55-64) arrive in St. Louis after Sunday’s 6-5 loss in Colorado, their fifth defeat in seven games.

Second baseman Rickie Weeks went 8 for 13 with four doubles in the series at Coors Field. He’s hitting .290 with four home runs in his last eight games against the Cardinals.

The Minnesota Twins wasted no time building their lead atop the AL Central after taking first place from the Chicago White Sox in their previous series.

The Twins will try to further pad their advantage as the teams open a three-game set Tuesday night at Target Field.

Minnesota (68-50) is a major league-best 17-4 since July 24, winning seven of eight to move three games ahead of Chicago (65-53). The Twins took two of three at U.S. Cellular Field last week after they entered the series tied for first.Watch Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins live stream mlb online broadcast august 17 2010

“It should be fun, I think that’s what baseball’s about,” Jim Thome told the Twins’ official website. “It makes it fun for each city to root for both teams. I know our fans will be excited.”

Minnesota’s play at home is a big reason for its run. The club has won seven straight at Target Field, sweeping Oakland there over the weekend.

The Twins are 4-2 at home against Chicago, taking the last three matchups.

On Sunday, Kevin Slowey didn’t allow a hit through seven innings but was pulled to start the eighth, while Thome hit a three-run homer in the seventh en route to a 4-2 victory.

Slowey, who missed his previous start because of elbow tendinitis, had thrown 106 pitches.

“I would boo me too,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “I took a pitcher out with a no-hitter going. But I would do it 1,000 times the same way.”

Slowey didn’t get a chance to complete a no-hitter, but he continued the Twins’ pitching dominance at home. They’ve allowed eight runs in the last seven home games, and opponents are batting .188 in that span.

Scott Baker (10-9, 4.76 ERA) will try to extend the trend for Minnesota, which hasn’t won eight in a row at home since April 19-May 9, 2008.

Baker beat the White Sox on Tuesday for his third straight win. He gave up five runs in six innings of a 12-6 win to improve to 2-0 against them this year and 6-3 over his career.

Chicago’s John Danks (12-8, 3.19), however, has been just as tough.

Danks has won five of his last six decisions and has a 1.93 ERA over his last five starts. The left-hander allowed one run in eight innings of a 6-1 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday.

“I hate pitching against this team, I’m not going to lie to you,” said Danks, who is 6-6 with a 5.01 ERA lifetime against the Twins.

Michael Cuddyer, who is 20 for 41 lifetime against Danks, is 4 for 11 against him this year.

Chicago dropped two of three to Detroit at home, losing 13-8 on Sunday.

J.J. Putz blew a save for a second straight game, giving up three runs in the eighth after his team rallied from a 5-1 deficit.

Chicago’s bullpen, which is without injured closer Bobby Jenks (back spasms), has a 7.06 ERA over the last seven games and had to pitch more than two innings in five of those games.

“To me, a very bad homestand,” manager Ozzie Guillen told the White Sox’s official website. “Very bad pitching. When we pitch well, we’re not hitting. That makes a combination for a very poor homestand. We’ve got to prepare better for the next road trip and play better, there’s no doubt.”

Cleveland Indians right-hander Jeanmar Gomez knew he was heading back to the minors prior to making his major league debut last month. The way Gomez has been performing, he might not have to worry about a return to Triple-A.

Gomez looks to remain undefeated when the visiting Indians open a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.Watch Cleveland Indians vs Kansas City Royals live stream mlb online broadcast august 17

WATCH LIVE NOW

Before making his major league debut against Detroit on July 18 in a spot start for Justin Masterson, Gomez (3-0, 1.54 ERA) was told he was returning to the minors after that game, in which he allowed two unearned runs and five hits over seven innings to beat the Tigers 7-2.

Gomez was recalled Aug. 1 and is 2-0 with a 2.20 ERA in three starts this month.

The 22-year-old gave up one run over six innings of Thursday’s 4-1 win over Baltimore, setting a franchise record for lowest ERA through his first four career starts. Manager Manny Acta is more than impressed with how Gomez, the youngest player on a club with nine rookies, has responded to major league hitters.

“For his age, his composure is above-average,” Acta told MLB’s official website. “… He hasn’t been intimidated by anything up here so far. There are times out there when he looks like he’s probably better off down there developing, but he’s pitched well four times for us now.”

Gomez will try to help the Indians (49-69) win consecutive games for the first since taking three straight July 31-Aug. 2. They ended a 3-6 homestand with Sunday’s 9-1 win over Seattle as designated hitter Travis Hafner returned from the disabled list and hit his 11th career grand slam during a seven-run seventh inning.

“There’s not a whole lot of experience on our team right now,” Hafner told the Indians’ official website. “If I’m feeling healthy, I wanted to get back as fast as I could. They left it up to me, and I just wanted to get back.”

Hafner has plenty of experience against Tuesday’s scheduled starter Zack Greinke (7-11, 3.99), going 11 for 35 with a homer and 12 strikeouts.

The Royals (49-69), who have won five of seven at Kauffman Stadium, will look for a strong performance from the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner as they continue their 10-game homestand.

Greinke, though, is 5-5 with a 4.79 ERA in 12 home starts this season. The right-hander went 10-3 with a 1.70 ERA in 17 starts at Kauffman Stadium in 2009.

After going 1-2 with an 8.05 ERA in his previous three starts, Greinke allowed one run over eight innings in Wednesday’s 2-1, 10-inning road loss to Los Angeles.

Greinke struck out eight and yielded three runs over six innings of a 6-4 win against Cleveland on May 13 to move to 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his last four starts versus the Indians at Kauffman Stadium.

He’ll be trying to slow down Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who has four consecutive two-hit games and is batting .314 this month. Cabrera is 11 for 24 lifetime against Greinke.

Royals shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who is 6 for 19 with five RBIs in five games against Cleveland this season, is batting .419 with three homers and six RBIs in his last nine games.

Beginning Tuesday, Cleveland and Kansas City meet 13 times in the final seven weeks of the season.

Faced with another setback, the New York Mets are doing their best to focus on winning games. Sending ace Johan Santana to the mound should help.

Without their star closer, Santana and the Mets try for a seventh consecutive win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Hours after learning Francisco Rodriguez will miss the rest of the season with a torn thumb ligament, New York (59-59) scored twice in the ninth inning to beat Houston 3-1 on Monday. Hisanori Takahashi earned his first career save.Watch New York Mets vs Houston Astros live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17

With outfielder Jason Bay (concussion) and catcher Rod Barajas (oblique) on the disabled list, the team announced Rodriguez will need surgery after suffering the injury during a fight with his girlfriend’s father at Citi Field last week.

“We’ve just been through a lot,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “We seem to continue to have difficulties keeping things from — having these type of injuries or these type of setbacks.”

Santana (10-6, 2.89 ERA) is dealing with his own personal issues. A Florida woman who accused him of rape sued Santana in Lee County, Fla., after authorities declined to prosecute the case. However, he will try to win his third straight start Tuesday.

“Every time we go out there, we go out there with the mentality of winning,” Santana told the Mets’ official website.

The left-hander has allowed nine hits without a run over 16 1/3 innings of his last two starts. Santana, who tossed a four-hitter and struck out 10 in a 4-0 win over Colorado on Thursday, is 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA in nine starts.

“(It’s) fun to watch him pitch,” teammate Angel Pagan said.

Santana is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts against Houston.

David Wright had three hits and former Astro Carlos Beltran had two with a homer Monday for the Mets, who haven’t won two straight on the road since a seven-game streak June 11-18.

Though Beltran has two home runs in 29 games this season, he is 8 for 18 in his last five contests. He is batting .319 with three home runs and seven RBIs in his last 11 at Minute Maid Park, where he spent part of 2004 playing for the Astros.

The Mets face former teammate Nelson Figueroa (3-1, 3.38) on Tuesday when he makes his second start of the season and first since the Astros acquired him off waivers last month.

The right-hander, 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in eight appearances with Houston, was scheduled to start last Saturday but was pushed back after he underwent an arteriogram due to migraine headaches.

“Everything checked out OK,” Figueroa told the Astros’ official website. “They just felt it was better to be on the safe side.”

Figueroa went 4-11 with a 4.53 ERA in 16 starts for the Mets in 2008-2009, but they designated him for assignment out of spring training in April.

Chris Johnson had two hits with an RBI on Monday for the Astros (51-66), who have scored nine total runs during their six-game skid against the Mets. The rookie third baseman is hitting .384 with 33 RBIs in 44 games since being recalled from the minors June 22.

Second baseman Jeff Keppinger — a former Met — is likely out of the lineup after spraining his left big toe Monday.

The San Diego Padres were a good team without Miguel Tejada. They’ve been even better with him contributing in a big way offensively.

Tejada looks to continue his hot stretch as the NL West-leading Padres go for a third straight victory Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The 36-year-old shortstop went 4 for 5 with two RBIs as San Diego (70-47) won for the seventh time in eight games, 9-5 over the Cubs on Monday.Watch San Diego Padres vs Chicago Cubs live stream major league baseball online broadcast 17/8

Since going 1 for 10 in his first three games after being acquired from Baltimore last month, Tejada has batted .351 in 13 contests, including 9 for 14 with four RBIs in his last three. He is a lifetime .324 hitter against the Cubs.

“I think we’ve all seen Miggie now,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s a professional hitter. Really knows his swing. He has a great approach. Hits all pitches and hits good pitching.”

A major-league leading 3.23 ERA has been the key to the Padres’ success this season. Jon Garland (11-8, 3.41 ERA) looks to build on his latest strong outing when he takes the mound Tuesday.

The right-hander allowed one hit and struck out five in six innings of a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Thursday, matching his win total from last season. The veteran has posted a 2.95 ERA in his last six outings.

“Jon knows how to work his way through a lineup,” Black said.

Kosuke Fukudome had three hits and two RBIs on Monday for the Cubs (50-69), who have dropped 15 of 19.

“This is not what we expected out of this team,” losing pitcher Tom Gorzelanny said. “This is an unfortunate year but there is still a lot of good things that can be done from this team.”

Fukudome has batted .321 with six RBIs in his last seven games. He is a lifetime .315 hitter versus San Diego.

Randy Wells (5-10, 4.60) tries to avoid a fourth straight loss when he takes the ball for the Cubs. The right-hander allowed seven runs in five innings Thursday but did not get the decision in an 8-7 loss at San Francisco.

“I’ve got no explanation for you. It’s pretty cut and dry,” Wells’ told the Cubs’ official website. “I can’t keep putting the team in a hole like that. It’s not professional, it’s not acceptable. Just chalk it up to a bad day and move on.”

Wells has gone 0-3 with a 7.48 ERA in his last four starts. He allowed three runs and struck out seven in seven innings of a 3-1 loss in his only appearance against the Padres on May 23, 2009.

San Diego is 2-6 at Wrigley Field since the start of the 2008 season.

The Atlanta Braves have been in first place in the NL East since May 31, but they have a losing record against the last-place Washington Nationals.

The Braves will try to change that Tuesday night when rookie Mike Minor makes his home debut in the opener of a three-game set.Watch Washington Nationals v Atlanta Braves live stream major league baseball online broadcast august 17

Atlanta (69-49) is 4-5 against Washington (51-67) thanks in part to the struggles of its RBI leaders. Troy Glaus is 4 for 32 with two of his team-high 69 RBIs against the Nationals while Brian McCann is 6 for 27 with two of his 63 RBIs.

Glaus is 2 for 14 against Nationals starter Scott Olsen (3-4, 5.11 ERA) while McCann is 6 for 23, but the focus on the mound Tuesday will be on Minor (0-0, 4.50).

Minor made his major league debut last Monday at Houston and allowed four runs in six innings in a 10-4 loss. The 22-year-old left-hander — the seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft — was starting in place of Kris Medlen, who is on the disabled list with a right elbow injury.

“There was excitement, nerves, but not too much,” Minor said. “I felt pretty comfortable out there. I know there are good guys out there and a really good guy behind the plate. After that first pitch, I was good.”

Minor went 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts with Triple-A Gwinnett before being called up.

Atlanta increased its lead to 2 1/2 games in the division over Philadelphia with a dramatic victory Monday. Melky Cabrera’s two-run single off Octavio Dotel with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a three-run rally in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“We don’t give up,” shortstop Alex Gonzalez said. “We’ve got a good offense. All those guys took great at-bats.”

Rookie Jason Heyward returned after missing a game with swelling in his right knee. Heyward went 0 for 3 to drop to 6 for 46 over his last 13 games.

The Braves lost both of Olsen’s starts against them this year, with the left-hander going 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA. Those contests were at Nationals Park, and Olsen is 1/3 with a 7.15 ERA in seven career outings at Turner Field.

Olsen turned in his shortest outing since July 8, 2007, on Wednesday by allowing seven runs over 1 2/3 innings in a 9-5 home loss to Florida.

“I made terrible pitches. You make bad pitches, they hit ’em. That’s what happened,” Olsen said.

The Nationals took two of three at home over the weekend from Arizona, winning 5-3 on Sunday after entering the series with five straight losses.

“We needed to win a series,” outfielder Josh Willingham told the Nationals’ official website. “It has been a while. So we hope to keep that going in Atlanta.”

Shortstop Ian Desmond is 9 for 26 with three homers and six RBIs against the Braves this year. Desmond leads the majors with 27 errors.
