SoundBridge Closeup

I have a bit of an eclectic collection of electronics. One of my favorites is the Roku SoundBridge. It plays Internet radio stations, like SomaFM’s Groove Salad, through my home theater receiver. I like this model for its industrial design, selection of outputs and the display. I’m also a big fan of the Roku Netflix Player.

After looking at this picture I realize I need to clean my electronics a bit more frequently.

Agata Olek Biography. The SPLAT! of colors hits you in the face, often clashing so ostentatiously that it instantly tunes you into the presence of severely cheeky humor. A moment later the fatigue of labor creeps into your fingers as a coal miner’s work ethic becomes apparent. Hundreds of miles of crocheted, weaved, and often recycled materials are the fabric from which the wild and occasionally wearable structures of her fantasylands are born.

Olek was born Agata Oleksiak in Poland and graduated from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland with a degree in cultural studies. In New York, she rediscovered her ability to crochet and since then she has started her crocheted journey/madness.

Resume sniffers may be pleased to know Olek’s work has been presented in galleries from Brooklyn to Istanbul to Venice and Brazil, featured in "The New York Times", "Fiberarts Magazine", "The Village Voice", and "Washington Post" and drags a tail of dance performance sets and costumes too numerous to mention.

Olek received the Ruth Mellon Award for Sculpture, was selected for 2005 residency program at Sculpture Space, 2009 residency in Instituto Sacatar in Brazil, and is a winner of apex art gallery commercial competition. Olek was an artist in an independent collective exhibition, "Waterways," during the 49th Venice Biennale. She was also a featured artist in "Two Continents Beyond," at the 9th International Istanbul Biennale.

Olek herself however can be found in her Greenpoint studio with a bottle of spiced Polish vodka and a hand rolled cigarette aggressively re-weaving the world as she sees.

www.dumboartfestival.org/press_release.html

The three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive. The now teenage D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® presents touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation’s largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists’ studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

The Dumbo Arts Center (DAC) has been the exclusive producer of the D.U.M.B.O Art Under the Bridge Festival® since 1997. DAC is a big impact, small non-profit, that in addition to its year-round gallery exhibitions, is committed to preserving Dumbo as a site in New York City where emerging visual artists can experiment in the public domain, while having unprecedented freedom and access to normally off-limit locations.

The Traverse City Wine & Art Festival will take place on Saturday August 22 from 5-10 PM at the Grand Traverse Commons in front of Building 50 on the lawn under the big tent.

The inaugural festival is being organized in order to create a landmark celebration of the wine, food and culture of northwest lower Michigan and Michigan’s wine coast for years to come. The evening will feature wines from 22 wineries from the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsulas and a selection of Traverse City and Leelanau restaurants serving food & desserts. Unlike many other wine festivals which function primarily as tasting events, the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival will feature full pours of area wines.

Country: File under ‘Martina’ or file under ‘Trisha’ ?

Country: File under ‘Martina’ or file under ‘Trisha’ ?

A good friend of mine attended the CMA awards in New York last year and very kindly brought back a bunch of CDs which he thought may sit well in the ‘shelves’ of our Americana online music store.

Finally managed to get around to listening to the collection of fairly well known, and some not so well known names during some long drives this last weekend.

The prospects looked good – an open road, no deadlines to meet and looking forward to unearthing some hidden gems and the buzz that you get when you get to put a new name in the racks and wait for the reactions to your ‘find’.

So, track one of the first CD and … nothing – not literally you understand, there wasn’t anything wrong with the CD player – but nothing … no emotion, no tingle down the spine, not even an instrument to speak of, just that anonymous ensemble of strings, keyboards and mid-eighties sustain guitar that identifies much of the country-pop sound.

Tried a couple more tracks, shrugged shoulders and mentally filed under ‘Faith soundalike’.

Next up, a similar tale. Listened through a couple of tracks and mentally filed under ‘Martina’.

And so it went on, and by the end of the first hour or so I found I had a set of three ‘Faiths’ two each of ‘Martina’ and ‘Trisha’, a dubious early nineties ‘Shania’ and even a ‘Sara’ !

My heart lifted once as a fiddle and dobro laden ‘Alison’ chimed in with a promising start, but track two and beyond saw a return to the ubiquitous swirling strings and the inevitable guitar solos, with the acoustic instruments confined to their place at the back of the mix.

Now you won’t find me criticising Faith, Martina, Trisha, Shania, or any of the trailblazing ‘New Country’ stars. They have brought many, many new fans to Country Music and their legacy is instilled in today’s Americana women singers – my gripe is only with lack of originality in the new generation of artists.

Why, ten or twelve years on, are labels content to produce bland, formula-driven music, a pale imitation of what has gone before, made even more asinine by the instrumentation and effects layered over the songs like so much cake icing?

Okay, this is beginning to turn into a rant, and let’s be honest, it is always very easy to criticize.

Instead let’s note that none of the artists in my clutch of CDs got filed under ‘Lee Ann soundalike’. Ms. Womack is beyond reproach in the humble opinion of this writer in managing to retain the accessibility and innocence of the first wave of New Country, and combine it with true Country Music values without having to resort to token gestures of throwing traditional instruments into the mix just to dress it up and try to appeal to the traditionalists.

None of my collection of wannabees even attempted to try to reach the standard set by ‘There’s More Where That Came From’. Interesting, but that surely speaks volumes.

While we’re showering praise, honourable mentions please to Miranda Lambert and Julie Roberts for being new artists that do actually bring something fresh and worthwhile to the table, and let’s hope Gretchen Wilson manages to stick to her principles. Oh, and let’s take the chance to celebrate Kelly Willis for still being Kelly Willis – standing her ground, and still making exceptional music in that wonderfully creative Texan environment.

Shame about my friend and his kind gesture, I hope if he’s reading this he isn’t offended, but Americana Music has to mean something, it has to feel as though it was produced because the artist just had to make the record or (s)he would burst.

I’m looking for Something to file under ‘H’ for Heart’n’Soul

Auto Glass Repair Shops Fall under Scrutiny

Auto Glass Repair Shops Fall under Scrutiny

Auto glass repair shops have fallen under some pretty serious scrutiny over the past few years. Remarkably, auto glass services has been marketed as one of the best home based businesses to get into and brand new auto glass repair shops are opening up all over Dallas.

Thus, after your windshield has fallen victim to a sailing roadway projectile or your rear passenger window has been annihilated by someone in search of a free stereo, the chances of needing an auto glass services company in the future are good. The process of choosing a strong, well founded auto glass services company should not be rocket science. Unfortunately, with the dramatic increase in fly by night, here today but gone tomorrow home based auto glass repair businesses popping up, college degrees might become necessary.

Fortunately for the auto glass repair industry, whether you are seeking a windshield repair or a minor divot patch, the auto glass services companies which are holding their own are those that are dedicated to providing the best service, educating their staff on new techniques, and investing in their business for tomorrow. While this is possible with some of those who jump into the auto glass services industry as a prime self employment business, those who are simply looking for easy money are dropping off the radar faster than they can take their signs down.

The impact on the industry has been noticed however, and consumers are becoming more and more skeptical of those who are maintaining small businesses. Windshield repair in Dallas is a near guarantee if you spend any amount of time behind the wheel. In some areas of Dallas, auto glass repair is a near guarantee if you park your car without a security system. This is why the fly by night auto glass services industry keep cropping up in this area. It is also the reason why they are not able to maintain their business, shutting down quickly, sometimes with cars sitting in their driveways waiting for repair.

Auto glass services indicate that the company in question offers additional services. While windshield repair and auto glass repair are the two most common needs, other jobs like window tinting should be readily available from a business that is dedicated to running a functioning business and isn’t out there hoping for a quick new career. Sometimes, a simple inquiry into what other services the company in question offers is a fast way to determine the legitimacy of the company. Word of mouth, internet reviews, and company standards are also part of the evaluation process.

One should never assume that just because a company is family owned and operated, that it is a fly by night company. In fact, many auto glass services companies are owned and operated by families and are even located on the family’s property. There is a big difference between a “work at home business idea” and a business that is on one’s property. High quality auto glass repair comes from a sound education in technique and style along with a firm hand at practice. This is not a skill that can be mastered through reading a few handouts and developing a few tricks of the trade.

A few key tips on choosing a high quality auto glass service center include longevity (has the business been there awhile or is it brand new?) and obvious successful windshield repair and other window repair services. Obvious success includes written testimonials that are often included in business literature, a chronically packed parking lot (beyond employee parking) and warranties. If they come to you, that’s a bonus. However, it’s not a requirement. If the auto glass repair company you are seeking doesn’t work with insurance companies and expects you to file your own claim for a reimbursement, this is a serious red flag.

Long term businesses will most likely work directly with your insurance company in order to provide you with the easiest, most hassle free experience possible. After all, like any good business, you are looking for quality craftsmanship that goes hand in hand with excellent customer service skills. One without the other is like cake without icing. Good? Yes. Could it be better? Absolutely. And finally, a business that has more than one location, even if they come to you for the repairs, is a sign of a higher quality auto glass service company.
